A visit to St. Paul's yesterday afternoon gave the South River field hockey team a firsthand look at the consistent play it's trying to find. The No. 4-ranked Gators got to work early on offense, getting a goal and an assist from Elaine Belitsos and Claire Edelen to easily distance themselves from the No. 5 Seahawks, 3-0. Scoring all three goals in the first half, St. Paul's displayed communication, aggressiveness and execution to improve to 10-1....

City man held in fatal stabbingPolice have charged a West Baltimore man with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a 60-year-old Baltimore County man during an argument in the McDonald's fast-food outlet in the 3400 block of Clifton Ave.Leon Wilson, 48, of the 3200 block of Clifton Ave., was also charged last night with possession of a deadly weapon and using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony, police said. He was being held at the Southwestern District lockup, pending a bail review hearing today before a District Court judge.

The biggest mystery in Butler may be how the area got its name. No one in the quaint village in northwest Baltimore County seems to know how or when the name first came into use. "It wasn't the name of the first postmaster, for example, or anything like that. So it remains quite a mystery," said John McGrain, a historian for Baltimore County. "I have heard that before," said Margaret Worrall, who has lived in Butler most of her life. "But I have not researched that myself," said Worrall, who has written several books on the area.

Senior catcher Scott Headd refuses to give up on a second straight trip for the Virginia baseball team to the NCAA tournament. Jane Frances Edelen Healy, a homemaker and officer in her family's furniture hardware business, died of a stroke Thursday at the Blakehurst retirement community. She was 92 and had lived in Wiltondale. Born Jane Frances Edelen in Baltimore and raised on Penhurst Avenue, she was a 1935 Seton High School graduate. She earned a bachelor's degree at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and a master's degree in English from the Johns Hopkins University. In her teens, she was crowned Jousting Queen of Maryland.

Perfection can be fleeting. The seventh-ranked Archbishop Spalding field hockey team learned that lesson yesterday as the host Cavaliers dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 10 St. Paul's in Severn. With the victory, the Gators - who improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Homer Division of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland's A Conference - not only tagged Archbishop Spalding with its first loss of the season, but they also became the first opponent to score a goal against the Cavaliers.
