EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- For Gary Clark, it started out like a nightmare revisited. The Washington Redskins wide receiver had the only scoring chance in the first half against the New York Giants when he beat Perry Williams deep in the second quarter. When Mark Rypien put the ball right in his hands, it seems likely he would make an over-the-shoulder catch for a 67-yard touchdown play on third-and-eight at the Washington 33.But Clark dropped it, and instead of trailing the Giants by 13-7 at halftime, the Redskins were trailing, 13-0.

Running back Earnest Byner will be doing whatever he can to help the Ravens end a three-game losing streak Sunday against the Washington Redskins. He will also be feeling some pangs of nostalgia. Some of Byner's most memorable years were spent in a Redskins uniform. He was traded from the Cleveland Browns to Washington in 1989, and played there for the next five seasons. From 1990 to 1992, Byner rushed for 3,265 yards. His best season was in 1990, when he recorded a career-high 1,219 yards on an NFL-high 297 carries.

In their second roster move in as many weeks, the Washington Redskins yesterday added defensive end Jason Buck.Buck, a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1987 who never lived up to his potential and was waived in preseason this year, will sign today after coming to terms on a contract yesterday.Buck will replace Markus Koch, who'll go on injured reserve after suffering a partial ligament tear in his knee in Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.Although Koch is supposed to be ready to play again in about six weeks, it's uncertain if he'll be brought back this season because the Redskins have eight players on IR and are allowed only five moves.

HERNDON, Va. -- The biggest Redskin is back, sort of.Presumably encouraged by 310-pound Joe Jacoby's recent capering as a guard, Washington management today re-signed Tom Moxley, the 320-pound rookie guard they cut in training camp.Moxley was signed only for the practice squad, but apparently has a future. He is 23 years old and he made it to the 60-man squad cut in August. At 6-7 the biggest lineman who ever played for Ohio State, Moxley was a ninth-round draft choice, 243rd overall. He played the second-highest number of minutes on the Buckeyes' 1989 squad.
