Anna Deavere Smith brings play to public TV"Fires in the Mirror" -- the Obie Award-winning one-woman play in which Baltimore-born actress, playwright and professor Anna Deavere Smith portrays a score of real-life characters from the 1991 Crown Heights riots -- will be broadcast on Maryland Public Television (channels 22 and 67) at 9 p.m. Wednesday.Directed for television by George C. Wolfe, the newly named producer of the New York Shakespeare Festival, "Fires in the Mirror" was originally produced in 1992 in a limited two-week run that was subsequently extended for three sold-out months.

And, there have certainly been forays into the distasteful over the years. But Jack Hanley's Self at Hand: A Play in 3 Modules - directed and designed by Towson University grad Christopher Eaves and produced by his New York company, eavesdrop - could make even the unshockable squirm.

Friends may call at the family owned Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home, P.A., 421 Crain Highway, S.E., Glen Burnie on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Services will be held on Wednesday at 12:00 PM. Interment in Glen Haven Memorial Park.

Fire destroyed a Manchester home Friday morning, killing two family pets and displacing the owners, who were at work at the time, authorities said. The fire marshal called to the scene in the 2100 block of Ebbvale Road determined that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning electrical adapter in the basement, authorities said. Jeffrey Lee and Barbara Dianne Copoulos lost their home and two large dogs that died of smoke inhalation, said K. Arthur McGhee, deputy state fire marshal. Damage to the single-story rancher was estimated at $125,000.

Shedrick Elliott Western Tech He didn't do it with smoke and mirrors -- although that seemed to be the case at times. Elliott relied heavily on the format that has helped the Wolverines in the past few years since he took over -- find the best places for athletes and try to develop younger kids. Even though Western Tech is a Class 1A school, it came in second in Baltimore County's title meet. The Wolverines then went on to win the Class 1A Central Region title and the state championship without much trouble.

Seven candidates have been recommended as "most fully qualified" for an appointment to the Harford County District Court. Their names have been forwarded to Gov. Martin O'Malley, who will appoint one of them to fill a vacancy left by Judge Angela M. Eaves, who was elevated to the Harford County Circuit Court. Harford County's Judicial Nominating Commission recommended: Yolanda Lauranzon Curtin, Theodore Mark Hart, Susan Hower Hazlett, Charles Edward Kearney Jr., Melissa Lazarich Lambert, Carl Ridgeley Schlaich and Roger Joseph Sullivan.
