No. 1 Eastern Tech beat No. 14 North Harford, 4-2, on Friday as the host Mavericks advanced to their first state softball semifinals in four years in a Class3A North region final. Eastern Tech (22-2) will play Linganore of Frederick County on Tuesday at Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie. Sophomore pitcher Jordan Cargile picked up the win over the Hawks (15-6), giving up seven hits and two earned runs in seven innings while striking out five batters. The Mavericks broke a 2-2 in the fourth when freshman shortstop Jenn January laced a single to right field, which scored Giselle Alvarez and Ashley Sauerwein.

For the 72 nd year, the area's most deserving unheralded football and girls basketball players will be honored at the McCormick Unsung Heroes Award Banquet Monday night at the Hunt Valley Inn. One male and one female will receive the 2012 Charles Perry McCormick Scholarships, which are valued at $36,000 over four years of college. The athletes - 112 seniors - come from 68 schools in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland.

Jordan Cargile and Breanna Casper were the one-two combination for top-ranked Eastern Tech softball Wednesday. Cargile threw a no-hitter and Casper led the bats as the host Mavericks defeated Western Tech, 11-0. Cargile struck out 10 and Casper went 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer and four RBIs. Alex Peay (2-for-3) had four stolen bases for Eastern Tech. No. 4 Howard 4, Marriotts Ridge 0: Winner Samantha O'Connor struck out seven in a two-hitter for the visiting Lions (12-2)

Olivia Ravadge hit a sacrfice fly to left field and Alex Braun scored the winning run as visiting No. 15 Chesapeake-AA upset No. 1 Severna Park, 5-4, on Wednesday. The Cougars (10-5) trailed 4-0 before Danielle Myers and Deja Sutton homered in the three-run fourth inning. Chesapeake-AA tied the game in the sixth on a wild pitch. The Falcons fell to 12-2. No. 2 Eastern Tech 13, Sparrows Point 0: Winner Jordan Cargile pitched a five-inning four-hitter and struck out seven as the host Mavericks (14-2)

Leah Allen Glenelg, infielder, junior The shortstop led the team in batting (.531) runs scored (30), stolen bases (20) and triples (six). She also had four home runs and has committed orally to play at Division I Kent State. Kristina Dillard Broadneck, infielder, junior The shortstop batted .462 and led Anne Arundel County in RBIs with 36. She also scored 21 runs and had a .924 fielding percentage and is being recruited by several Division I programs.

Hereford suffered its third straight loss to Frederick County's Urbana, this time in the Class 4A/3A North Region final, 32-27, Wednesday night in Parkton. The Hawks, from Frederick County, topped Perry Hall, 36-27, to advance to the final against the Bulls, who throttled Eastern Tech, 42-26, in the other semifinal. With the victory, Urbana advances to a state semifinal at North Point High in Waldorf on Saturday. Hereford (23-7) grabbed a 12-6 advantage in the regional final after freshman Billy Hess decisioned senior Dan Morley in the 152-bracket before the Hawks drew even with wins by Jacob Thomas and Mike Virnelson.

Owings Mills wrestling coach Guy Pritzker had to smile following the first day of the Franklin Invitational. Heading into the tournament, Pritzker had heard No. 7 John Carroll and No. 9 Curley were hoping to make a point against his fifth-ranked squad. But after Friday's quarterfinal round, the Eagles have nine wrestlers advancing to the semis, and they lead the scoring at the 17-team event with 100.5 points. He still made a point not to fuel the fire. "It's only the first day," Pritzker said.
