COLLEGE PARK - After Maryland defeated Eastern Michigan, 51-24, on Saturday, Darrius Heyward-Bey took a short victory lap. The wide receiver jogged around the Byrd Stadium field's perimeter, high-fiving students in the first row. But just as quickly as he began his celebration, Heyward-Bey cut it off. With Clemson looming at the beginning of the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on Saturday, it was time for Heyward-Bey and his teammates to look ahead...

But he stopped far short of awarding the fourth-ranked Tar Heels a pass to the Final Four."When you have a one-game shot, anything can happen," Sutton said. "If Temple, Eastern Michigan and our club had to play North Carolina in a series, North Carolina is going to win."

INDIANAPOLIS - Mike Krzyzewski tried to take his Duke basketball team on a trip down memory lane in yesterday's opening round game of the NCAA tournament Southeast Regional at the RCA Dome. But instead of reliving 1991, when a dominant team won here for the first of its back-to-back national championships, the Blue Devils simply relived the final week of their current, injury-battered season. The result was a 75-60 pounding at the hands and feet of Eastern Michigan, which moved into tomorrow's second round against top-seeded Connecticut.

COLLEGE PARK - Overconfident? Not a chance. That pretty much sums up Maryland's 50-3 rout of overmatched Eastern Michigan last night at Byrd Stadium, which was highlighted by three touchdowns and 133 rushing yards from tailback Bruce Perry and another dominating performance by the defense. In blowing out an inferior opponent - the biggest mismatch since a 52-0 Maryland win over Wake Forest in 1996 - Ralph Friedgen's team erased any fears that it would produce a dull performance in the afterglow of its season-opening win over North Carolina.
