The problem:: A hole formed at a corner storm drain near Patterson Park despite calls for help. The back story:: This week's Watchdog features a problem that may be a familiar sight to Baltimore residents. Cheryl Shiflett called to complain about a storm drain at Eastern Avenue and South Glover Street. Several months ago, she and other neighborhood residents noticed that the manhole and curb were crumbling. "The curb started to fall off, and cars of course were hitting that," Shiflett said.

Kenneth W. Harn Jr., a retired funeral director's assistant and longtime South Baltimore resident, died of complications from a stroke Dec. 14 at Mercy Medical Center. He was 67. Mr. Harn, who was known as "Kenny" or "Wesley," was born and raised in South Baltimore and attended city public schools. Mr. Harn retired this month from McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, where he had been a funeral director's assistant and chauffeur for 48 years. "Kenny was very devoted to his position and took pride in every aspect of funeral service, and was very willing to share his knowledge and experience with young people who chose this work," said Francis Karczmarek, a McCully-Polyniak funeral director.

Maryland woman dies in Bermuda accident A Baltimore County woman was killed in a motorcycle accident while traveling in Bermuda, according to law enforcement officials there. Bethany Heinrichs, 33, of Halethorpe was riding a rented motorcycle about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday when she hit a curb on Penders Road in Sandys Parish, according to the Bermuda Police Service. Heinrichs was taken to King Edward Medical Center with chest and abdominal injuries, and was pronounced dead at 8:45 that night.

A 12-inch water main break in eastern Baltimore County that affected about 120 homes and caused traffic detours at the intersection of Back River Neck Road and Old Eastern Avenue could take until this morning to repair, public works officials said. The break was discovered about 10 a.m. Thursday. Police blocked off Old Eastern Avenue for two blocks in both directions and parts of Back River Neck Road. - Brent Jones
