Famous for such '80s classics as "Girls on Film," "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," English rock band Duran Duran hasn't disbanded since its inception in 1978. But the lineup has gone through several changes, including the loss - and return - of original members. The "Fab Five," including lead singer Simon Le Bon (above) and minus one, guitarist Andy Taylor, who parted for a second time in 2006, performs at Merriweather Post Pavilion, 10475 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

They're still the way you remember them. Sort of. If you were around in the early '80s and tuned into this new channel called MTV, then you know all about Duran Duran: five stylish British guys who always looked coolly detached and glamorous. The band was among the first acts to exploit the video medium, using grand cinematic styles. Remember the video for "Rio"? The dudes were jet-setting playboys. And in the clip for "Hungry Like the Wolf," they were great adventurers reminiscent of something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark. And, yes, there was the music: synth-heavy and lyrically ambiguous.

Year-end senior activities had been planned months in advance at Marriotts Ridge High School, which will graduate its first class in May. A farewell breakfast, a farewell assembly and a class awards night had been scheduled May 22. The senior picnic was planned for the next day. But those dates became obsolete earlier this week when the Howard County school system announced the graduation schedule. Instead of attending the awards night May 22, seniors at Marriotts Ridge will be receiving their diplomas.

The images that open Shane Meadows' deeply personal, politically charged drama This Is England begin with cheeky nostalgia, an innocuous collection of 1980s British iconography - grinning Margaret Thatcher photo-ops, primitive video games, Duran Duran, the royal wedding of Charles and Di. The montage then quickly shifts to more potent reflections: the Falklands War, angry clashes between civilians and police, and Thatcher standing cheek by jowl with Ronald...

You never can tell where an obsession with Apple will lead. Last week, I saw the new iPod Touch ad on television numerous times. It's a clever ad that shows off the multitouch technology while a very catchy song plays in the background. A very catchy song. In fact, I couldn't get the song out of my head. I went to Apple's Web site to watch the ad. At the bottom of the Web page, I noticed Apple had thoughtfully noted the song's name, "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex"; the band that made it, CSS; and that it was available on iTunes.

And more than that, you'll see seven Olympic gold medalists, who will all be performing Saturday, as part of "Smucker's Stars on Ice." Skating fans can catch 2002 Olympic champions Sarah Hughes, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, Alexei Yagudin, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. Also performing will be Ekaterina Gordeeva (right)

You should see this," he says. "I'm looking out over the Aegean Sea. It's awesome." That's John Taylor, bassist for Duran Duran. He's calling from his hotel suite in Greece, where the band is scheduled to perform later that night. The other members -- lead singer Simon LeBon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist Andy Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor (none of the Taylors are related, by the way) -- are unavailable. The view from his window must be captivating. "Marvelous," he whispers. In the past nine months or so, Taylor and his band mates have had little time to sit still.

Much has happened in the years since Duran Duran ushered in the '80s and the so-called new romantic era with the group's pretty-boy dance rock. Since conquering the world with its breakthrough hit "Planet Earth," the group and its synthetic sound have been successively replaced by hair metal, grunge and hip-hop. Yet throughout it all, one thing's remained the same: the group's die-hard devotees, or Duranies. A bona fide phenom circa 1982, Duraniacs, as they were then called, aren't as demonstrative today as they were when they blasted cassettes of "Girls on Film" from their boom boxes, dancing along in sleeveless concert T-shirts.
