In 24 years as a men's college basketball head coach, Temple's Fran Dunphy has seen his fair share of players graduate to the NBA. He thinks Towson senior Jerrelle Benimon has what it takes to go to that next level. “I think he's got a really good chance to be in the league next year because he's got good energy, he's got a good enthusiasm, he finishes at the rim,” Dunphy said after watching the 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward score a career-high 32 points and grab 10 rebounds in the Tigers' 75-69 win against the Owls Wednesday night at SECU Arena.

Players who keep normal college hours, man-to-man defense and a quicker tempo are in. Pre-dawn practices, a matchup zone and games in the 50s are out - along with the inimitable coach who threatened a rival's life and admitted using a goon. Temple comes to Towson on Saturday (2 p.m., Comcast SportsNet), and for the first time since 1982, John Chaney isn't on the Owls' bench. Maybe the most accomplished coach never to get to the Final Four, Chaney guided the Owls to five regional finals and a No. 1 ranking in 1988.

Dolores "Jackie" Dunphy stood at the front of the dark classroom, gripped a 40-caliber SIG-Sauer pistol and pointed it at the image of a disgruntled employee projected on a screen. The man in the picture sat alone with a gun in his hand on the back steps of an industrial warehouse. Sgt. Bob Wagner instructed Dunphy, a 79-year-old Ellicott City retiree, to try to coax the man into surrendering. "Be a good boy and put the gun down," she says, sparking laughter from other members of Howard County's Citizens' Police Academy.

A Baltimore County police officer shot a woman during the search of a house in Dundalk early yesterday, police said, and she was later pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting occurred about 5 a.m. as police were executing a narcotics search warrant in the 8100 block of Del Haven Road, said Officer Shawn Vinson, a police spokesman. The warrant was being served as part of an investigation involving that residence, he said. When police arrived, Vinson said, officers set off a device that makes a loud noise and a flash to distract the occupants of a home.
