It takes some guts to pick Duke to win the NCAA tournament around these parts, but if anyone has the local clout to get away with it, it's probably Orioles catcher Matt Wieters. Wieters picked Duke on his NCAA bracket as part of a contest the Orioles are holding for fans . Basically, Dan Duquette, J.J. Hardy, Jim Johnson Brian Roberts and Wieters made their picks, and fans can win tickets or autographed memorabilia by backing the most accurate bracket. Because I know you're curious, Johnson and Roberts predict Kansas will cut down the nets in Atlanta, while Hardy and Duquette are rolling with No. 1 overall seed Louisville.

For a team that has struggled with possession this season, the Loyola women's lacrosse team certainly set the right tone early in Saturday's game against James Madison. Unfortunately for the Greyhounds, they could not sustain it beyond the first half. The No. 12 Greyhounds scored the first four goals and shut out James Madison before halftime, but the Dukes seized the momentum early in the second half and dominated possession in overtime for a 9-8 victory at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex.

Here are thoughts on Maryland's victory over No. 2 Duke and a look ahead to the Terps' matchup with North Carolina today in the ACC tournament semifinals: Do good things come to those who wait? Maybe it's fortunate for Maryland that college basketball seasons are long. Terps fans waited this season -- not always patiently -- for young Maryland to grow up. Dez Wells said Maryland is “peaking” at just the right time. We'll see if the Terps can sustain their development.

Before the season began, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told me he had a goal centered on free throws. Here was the goal: "We try to make more free throws than our opponents shoot. " When that happens, Maryland usually prevails. It happened last night in Maryland's 75-62 victory over Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. Maryland made 22 free throws and the Deacons shot 21. It happened the last time Maryland played Wake in the regular season. It happened the last time Maryland played Duke.

Baltimore Sun reporter Jeff Barker, editor Matt Bracken, and Sun intern/Diamondback co-sports editor Josh Vitale weigh in on the three biggest topics of the past week in Maryland sports. What will the environment be like at Friday night's Maryland-Duke game in the ACC tournament? Jeff Barker: First of all, the Terps usually have a pretty decent fan contingent. Their red-clad group was louder than the Wake Forest fans during Maryland's win Thursday night at Greensboro Coliseum.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland had beaten No. 2 Duke earlier in the season, but not like this - not in a rugged, Atlantic Coast Conference tournament game in front of thousands of Blue Devils fans in a game the Terps desperately needed to keep their improbable NCAA tournament hopes alive. Saving its best for the near-end of a trying season, Maryland got a career-high 30 points from sophomore Dez Wells and claimed an 83-74 quarterfinal victory in Greensboro Coliseum, a building that has practically become Duke's home away from home.

The No. 20 Duke men's lacrosse team jumped all over host No. 4 North Carolina early and often Wednesday night. A strong first-half performance and finish led the Blue Devils to an 11-8 upset of the rival Tar Heels. Jordan Wolf finished with a game-high three goals for Duke, which led 8-4 at halftime. A third-quarter lull let Carolina back in as the Heels went on a 3-0 run to cut the gap to 8-7. But Duke outscored Carolina 3-1 in the fourth, with Wolf adding the final goal with 1:49 left.
