Dangerous Space By Kelley Eskridge Mary Modern By Camille DeAngelis Crown / 368 pages / $24 In the late 1980s, British novelist Maureen Duffy wrote a compelling series, The Gor Saga, in which cloning took center stage. These works appeared soon after the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, was born in Britain. Duffy's works were later turned into a highly successful mini-series for the British Broadcasting Corp. and shown in the United States on PBS. The unsettling world of cloning, mixed species and the other repugnant possibilities wrought by playing too hard in the laboratory a la Mary Shelley's Dr. Frankenstein gave readers and viewers tremendous pause.

The Carroll Child Care Centers Inc. in Westminster is trying to launch a fundraising campaign, after the United Way of Central Maryland unexpectedly denied the nonprofit day care center a $71,000 grant to serve low-income families. To brainstorm ideas and connect the center with donors, the Community Foundation of Carroll County is sponsoring a brown bag luncheon Friday for the center. "This is doable. It's not like they're trying to raise $1 million," said Audrey Cimino, the foundation's executive director.

For the past 31 years, low-income families have counted on a United Way grant to help them pay tuition, reduced on a sliding scale, at Carroll Child Care Centers in Westminster. But the nonprofit center recently received an unwelcome Christmas surprise: Its annual United Way funding will cease Dec. 31. "Now they're more likely to fund large organizations, like the Cancer Society or the Boys & Girls Clubs," said Joyce Duffy, Carroll Child Care Center's executive director since March. "Stand-alone agencies like ours are not on their radar."

Jason Weesner is halfway up the wall when he hesitates. He briefly glances down to check his foot position, then plots his next move. Grip after grip, he pushes and pulls himself to the top of the 28-foot edifice, pauses for a moment and yells "take!" -- the rock climber's jargon for "get me down!" After he is lowered down the wall, he unties the knot in his rope and rests. This is Weesner's first indoor-rock-climbing session -- an introductory class at Earth Treks Climbing Center in Timonium.

The sad honor of bringing nearly a century of distinguished and distinctive political cartooning at The Sun to an end fell to Kevin Kallaugher last week. Better known to readers as KAL, he has regularly amused and ticked them off since joining the newspaper's staff in 1988. For his final cartoon published last Sunday, he drew the presidents, Maryland governors and Baltimore mayors who were in office during his tenure at The Sun. They are Presidents Clinton, Bushes 41 and 43; Maryland Governors Schaefer, Glendening and Ehrlich; and Baltimore Mayors Schmoke and O'Malley.
