It was a move Loyola coach Dave Cottle was forced to make.Dealing with an early-season injury to one of his expected top goal scorers and inexperience on the attack, Cottle had to shift senior Brian Duffy from midfield to his accustomed attackman slot.It took less than 10 minutes yesterday for Cottle to see the impact of that adjustment.Duffy supplied all of his scoring in the first half, netting four goals and adding two assists to jump-start No. 8 Loyola to a 17-8 HTC trampling of No. 12 Hofstra at Curley Field.

Baltimore institutions don't always fade away. Sometimes they reopen under new owners. Such is the case of Duffy's Restaurant (3436-38 Frederick Ave.), which had been an Irvington favorite for more than 75 years before it closed a year or so ago. I first heard Duffy's had reopened this summer when a reader wrote me: "Their crab cake sandwich ($9.95) with a side dish of coleslaw is one of the best I have ever had in this area," said Dr. William Wolfel. "The lady owners are very gracious and friendly."

Catholic's Jenna Duffy felt like she could not miss last night. The junior sharpshooter scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Cubs over defending champion Beth Tfiloh, 46-35, for the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland C Conference championship last night at Villa Julie College. Duffy's third-quarter 20-footers blew the game open as the Cubs (18-5) avenged their loss to the Warriors (18-3) in last year's C Conference final. "When I came out after halftime and I shot three in a row and they went in [in the shoot-around]

There were no record shops in the neighborhood, and the nearest one was two bus rides away. The tiny, hopelessly conventional Welsh town where Aimee Anne Duffy grew up offered next to nothing in the way of soul education. But years later, the singer, who goes by just her last name, would find the earthy stylist within. A new world opened up when, at about age 19 or 20, she discovered the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and other legends from soul's golden era. Such vintage sounds largely inspired Rockferry, her critically lauded, gold-selling debut that was released in March.

Both the boys and girls indoor track teams from Dulaney know how to go the distance. And that ability produced a pair of Baltimore County championships yesterday. The title won by the girls, led by distance runner Tenke Zoltani's four gold medals, was the No. 1-ranked Lions' seventh straight; the boys, led by three golds from distance runner Billy Duffy, captured their first crown in decades. No one knew for sure, but Lions coach Leal Williams said he thought Dulaney's last county boys title was in 1968.

A Baltimore County Circuit Court judge has ruled that thousands of people who bought vehicles from Jerry's Chevrolet can join a suit alleging that the Carney dealership slapped bogus charges on its customers. Baltimore County Circuit Judge Robert N. Dugan certified as a class action the suit that was filed against Jerry's last summer by Catherine M. Duffy, a Carney resident. She claims that she was assessed a $595 charge for "Karcraft Finish Protection" when she bought a Chevrolet Blazer from the dealership in 1997 but that she received no services in return.

HERB SMITH the Western Maryland College political scienc prof and polling expert, sent us this intersting bit of Americana from the March 22 Election Administration Reports:"When neither the voters of Stanley County, S.D., nor the South Dakota Supreme Court was able to determine a winner of last November's election for state's attorney, the contestants settled the matter March 16 the old fashioned frontier way -- with a hand of stud poker."It seems Republican Curtis D. Mortenson edged out Democrat Bernard E. Duffy 703-702 on election night.
