What really distinguishes the Olympus DS-330 digital voice recorder ($150) from other recorders I've tried is how natural it feels in your palm. It's like a match made in heaven. The DS-330 has more depth than the flat recorders offered by some competitors - nearly a full inch compared to a third- to a half-inch on some other models - yet, it fits into a purse or shirt pocket as well as any flat recorder. Users can save up to 199 recordings in each of five folders with a total flash memory capacity of 16 MB. While the DS-330 will record up to 5 1/2 hours in long-play mode, I preferred the better quality of the short-play mode - about 2 1/2 hours worth.

The awfulness of Gaza goes on. So does the madness in Iraq and Syria. Wildfires burn through the West, while in Washington, D.C., our do-absolutely-nothing Congress prepares to adjourn, freeing up time for representatives and senators to go home and campaign to be re-elected so they can accomplish nothing for another two years. It seems an opportune time to consider a far less depressing issue, one that, outside of Hollywood and the Redneck Riviera, affects only a small minority: artificial body enhancement, AKA cosmetic surgery or "having a little work done.

Teachers at North Carroll High School began noticing that their D students had learned one thing very well -- how to do the least work for a passing grade.Their disarmingly simple solution: eliminate the Ds and force students to earn at least a C or flunk.Three years later, the 1,300-student high school is quietly setting a precedent. National experts know of no other school that has excised Ds from the grade scale and given Fs in their place, but they're intrigued. With little fanfare, North Carroll took a direct approach to what public schools all over the country are trying to do -- raise standards.

RICHMOND, Va. - Delaware State's women were a tad stale yesterday after a nine-day layoff, but it didn't take long for them to refresh themselves. With the aid of their vaunted pressure defense and notable contributions from the bench, the second-seeded Lady Hornets pulled away from Coppin State in the final 12 minutes and romped to a 68-45 victory in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. It was the ninth straight win for Delaware State (19-9)

$19.99 for Nintendo DS. Rated Everyone. *** As Mr. ESC, players guide survivors out of disaster areas in the puzzle game Exit DS. There are 150 levels to challenge players as they try to reach each stage's exit. Mr. ESC can walk, run, jump, climb and use items, but he's only one man. To succeed, he'll need the help of the survivors he's rescuing, whom he can order to take routes he can't, help push heavy objects, pick up items he can't reach, and otherwise help him help them. The game has a stylish, expressive look and solid game-play fundamentals, but it is hampered a bit by poor path-finding on the part of rescued survivors.

Nintendo Co.'s sales are speeding along faster than a getaway car, shrugging off economic woes as if they were bugs on the windshield. Its Wii video game console continues to be sold out in many stores. Sales of its DS hand-held console remain hot despite its being a four-year-old product, ancient by game-technology standards. Sales of the Wii Fit exercise game, launched in May, are on track to surpass those of one of 2008's best-selling titles, Grand Theft Auto IV, by the end of the year, according to projections by Wedbush Morgan Securities.
