A large drawing hangs behind Doreen Bolger's desk, dripping with the words "Forward in all directions. " The phrase, drawn with bleach on dark paper by Baltimore artist Colin Benjamin, has become something of a mantra for Bolger, the director of the Baltimore Museum of Art . "I like it for many reasons," Bolger said. "How do you move forward if 'forward' is in five directions?" Lately, that's just what she's been doing. For nearly two years, she has overseen the renovation of the museum's Contemporary Wing, which reopens this week.

Doreen Bolger's home wasn't built for art. It's not one of those open-air boxes made of white walls and windows, the ceilings laced with pinpoint spotlights and the rooms furnished with sculpture instead of cozy settees. It is, instead, a failed attempt at a rowhouse on St. Paul Street in what was once Peabody Heights. The flat front and the breezeway side entrances were such a disappointment in 1872 that not another one was built. Inside, the home of the director of the Baltimore Museum of Art is warm, but so modestly lit that the stairs to the second floor should carry a warning.

Doreen Bolger stands amid a work-in-progress. Around her, the Cone Wing of the Baltimore Museum of Art, stripped of paintings, seems oddly naked. Where one expects to see Matisse's "Large Reclining Nude," a workman feeds out smooth loops of insulated wire. Another workman perches on a ladder where the French artist's "Seated Odalisque, Left Knee Bent" ordinarily would hang. The wing usually houses the museum's biggest attraction: the art collection amassed by Baltimore sisters Etta and Claribel Cone that includes works by Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, Cezanne and Pissarro.

When he first saw her in the crowd at a 1981 Charlie Daniels concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Rob Troutman wondered aloud: "What's a beautiful girl like that doing in a wheelchair?"He found out a few days later. By coincidence, he met Doreen Leitch through a friend in Randallstown. Doreen had muscular dystrophy; it had been diagnosed when she was 7. She had started using the wheelchair in 1979, when she was 23.Rob thought she was smart, strong and remarkably independent, but full of anger that she would never walk again.

Although Hagar Jump twisted and craned her neck, it was HTC almost impossible for her to look in the mirror and see what Doreen Redmond was doing to Hagar's hair. The mirror at Doreen's station at the Salon de Beaute was nearly covered with snaps of Doreen, her husband Junie, their three children, several generations of black labs and Doreen's Honorable Mention in the Mid-Atlantic Stylist's Conference Competition for Cellophaning. ''Mind what you do to my bangs,'' Hagar said. ''Last time, you left me looking like Mamie Eisenhower.

The accident occurred while the Fishers were on vacation with their kids, Rickey, 10, and Ashley, 7. The kids were staying with friends in the Orlando area when their parents were killed.
