On the morning of May 22, one of the worst fires in modern Baltimore history engulfed an east side rowhouse, killing six people and severely injuring seven others, mostly children. This tragic story riveted the region. It also displayed the strengths of a metropolitan newspaper that is built to respond quickly. The Sun's early news team, created to quickly feed breaking news to the paper's Web site, led an energetic effort that set the stage for a rich and comprehensive package of articles, photos and graphics that appeared in the Wednesday, May 23 edition.

These days in college basketball, time marches on. For some, it marches faster - and with fewer shouts of discouragement - than others. In leading Florida to a second consecutive national championship, Billy Donovan did everything you could ask of a college head coach, and then some. He will be rewarded handsomely for it, either by Florida or by Kentucky. Win-win all the way. Greg Oden is in the market for a raise, too. Same for his Ohio State teammate Mike Conley Jr., and Florida underclassmen Corey Brewer, Joakim Noah and Al Horford.

Midway through the second quarter of yesterday's matchup between No. 4 Loyola and No. 5 Calvert Hall, Dons midfielder Tim Donovan leveled a Cardinals player who was trying to carry the ball across midfield. While that play helped set the physical tone for the visiting Dons on defense, Donovan was equally effective on the attack, scoring four goals in Loyola's 10-6 victory over its rival. After dropping their first two Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference games this season, the Dons are hoping yesterday's win will be the catalyst for a strong run to the playoffs.

John Pica got an old football player's autograph the other day. Stop the presses, right? But there's a little story there that says something about "the old NFL," as Pica put it. At a charity auction a few years back, Pica, a former state senator, bought a helmet with the autographs of Johnny Unitas and Raymond Berry. A year and a half ago, he attended a prayer breakfast where Lenny Moore was speaking. He took the helmet along and asked Moore to sign it, which he did. Then Pica got to thinking: Wouldn't it be great to get the autographs of the two other Colts Hall of Famers - Artie Donovan and Gino Marchetti - who played with those guys?
