Tim Donner and his radio partner, Syd Thrift, were walking into the All-Star FanFest in Pittsburgh in July when they were stopped by a memorabilia dealer. "There's Syd Thrift," the vendor bellowed. "The man who invented baseball." "It could have been about his age, his experience, his success or his knowledge," said Donner, who spent Sunday afternoons each of the past four seasons hosting the syndicated radio show, Talkin' Baseball, with Thrift. "Or all of it." Thrift, whose baseball career spanned almost 50 years, including three seasons running the Orioles, died Monday night in Milford, Del., hours after having his second knee replacement surgery in two years.

Expect a big marketing push and huge sales. But don't expect a "director's cut," extra scenes or, God forbid, bloopers. On this DVD, that would be sacrilege. The controversial The Passion of the Christ, which unexpectedly became this year's highest-grossing film, will make its debut on DVD and VHS on Aug. 31, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced. The film, which focuses on the final hours of the life of Jesus Christ and was directed by Mel Gibson, has grossed nearly $370 million at the domestic box office since its Feb. 25 release.

Hillard Donner said he knew he was in trouble when he peered in the window of his Annapolis wine shop and saw a bottle of Smirnoff vodka float by. "Fifty-seven years, I've never seen anything like this," he said. "I don't ever want to see it again, either." Of the many businesses socked by the tidal surges of Hurricane Isabel, Donner's Mills Wine and Spirits is one of the oldest and the most revered among Maryland wine enthusiasts. Since 1946, Mills has stood its ground at the foot of Main Street, offering one of the best selections of wine in Maryland.

The Annapolis liquor board has taken its first step to repeal a law that requires gray-haired ladies and gentlemen who walk with canes to prove they are old enough to buy a bottle of booze. Merchants and city officials say they are pleased that the board voted 4-1 last week in favor of rescinding a city law requiring liquor store clerks to ask for identification from all patrons. "I'm very happy it's going to be over with," said Hillard Donner, owner of Mills Wine and Spirit Mart on the City Dock.
