Gotta love a dog. They love unconditionally, they're loyal and always glad to see you. It turns out they can help a kid to read, too. Holly, a 70-plus-pound yellow Labrador retriever, has served as a patient, and interested, audience for countless youngsters excited to read aloud. But her Nov. 10 visit to the Lansdowne Library was the last for Holly and her human companion, Valerie Reidel, as volunteers with Pets on Wheels Maryland, who participate in the Paws To Read program at the library on Third Avenue.

People loooooove to complain about dog poop under foot. Understandable. Wait till they find out that wayward exrement is also turning up in the air. You can't escape it! According to a new study by University of Colorado Boulder, most of the wintertime airborne bacteria in Cleveland and Detroit is fecal matter. And most likely, it's the fecal matter of dogs. I'll repeat that -- it's not just that poop is turning up in the air sporadically in these cities -- it's MOST of the bacteria there.

When is the value of the life of one animal not the same as that of another animal? I guess it is when one is a dog and one is a deer. Apparently it is "the right thing to do" according to one rescuer and "it would have been the wrong thing for anyone to turn their back" according to another rescuer, when talking about the rescue of a dog who ended up in the water in the Inner Harbor ( "Baltimore Police officers rescue dog from Inner Harbor," ...

C'mon Teddy. You've got two games in five days. Let's get both of them right -- starting with this Sunday's game again the Bengals. Hopefully Teddy will be back on track, leading to ... ice cream! If Teddy the Pigskin Picking Pup ends the season with a winning record (or probably, at least close to one) the folks over at Frosty Paws promised to throw an ice cream party for the needy pups at Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter.

A family was reunited over the holidays with their dog that had been missing four years. Dodger disappeared while the Willey Family of Owings Mills was away. They thought he had been safe inside, but when they got home, the Collie mix was gone, with no signs of how he got out. They searched everywhere and called all the local shelters -- no luck. But on Dec. 27, an older Collie was found on Honeysuckle Lane in Severna Park. A good samaratin brought the dog to Anne Arundel County Animal Control.
