Washington Redskins linebacker Marvcus Patton prefers to treat today's matchup with the Tennessee Oilers in Memphis "like an exhibition game where there aren't many people in the stands."Running back Stephen Davis wants to pretend as though it is like any other game on the 16-game schedule and "just go out and play."Cornerback Cris Dishman will be thankful he is wearing a Redskins uniform instead of the Oilers jersey he sported for nine years.Quarterback Gus Frerotte wants to think about how fortunate the Redskins will be "to do things we normally can't do in road games, like hearing audibles and snap counts."

LANDOVER -- John Elway took the day off to rest his strained right hamstring yesterday. But it didn't matter too much. Many of the Washington Redskins' players also took the afternoon off, even though they lined up to play against the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. The result was predictable and ugly for Washington, which fell to 0-4 and was nearly blown off its home field for the second time this season, being humiliated by 4-0 Denver, 38-16, at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.Elway's backup, Bubby Brister, has seldom looked better, and Terrell Davis didn't seem to extend himself too much to gain 119 yards on 21 carries.

HOUSTON -- Cornerback Cris Dishman calls it a black cloud. A big, nasty one. One that turns two-point wins into one-point losses. One that causes fumbles in the red zone. One that has followed the Oilers all season, and turned a 5-2 start into Christmas at home.Exactly when the Oilers' promising season went south is a matter of opinion. The 20-19 loss to Kansas City in the first game? The one-point heartbreaker against San Francisco? The blocked field goal returned for a touchdown on the final play in the loss to Seattle?

PHILADELPHIA -- A few minutes after the Washington Redskins were humiliated, 24-10, by the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday, Redskins cornerback Cris Dishman said: "I hope everybody got a good picture of this, because they will never see me play this bad again."From the Washington angle, there were almost no good pictures of anything that happened at Veterans Stadium on a summer-like afternoon. The Eagles pounded the Redskins with a punishing rushing attack and an aggressive defensive game.Philadelphia rolled up 26 first downs to 12 for Washington, 449 total net yards to 228, 203 net yards rushing to 30, and 13 first downs rushing to one.The Eagles' defense came after Gus Frerotte, forcing him to dance around in the pocket just to get off several passes.

Pro baseball scouts often overlook very good high school prospects in this area because they are not seen as much as those in the warm-weather climates of California and Florida.Arundel High coach Bernie Walter, who travels the country working clinics and serving as a member of the USA Baseball Committee, agrees that Maryland players are overlooked. Walter cites the "pattern of scouting" as one of the main reasons.Maryland is considered part of the north in scouting territory and most of the full-time scouts up here are sent south to Florida to check out high school prospects.

Ben McDonald's shoulder is sore and he goes on the disabled list. Kevin Brown's finger is dislocated and he's sidelined for perhaps a month. The Orioles are some eight games behind the Boston Red Sox.Much more of this and it could be time to just start planning and playing for the future. Play Manny Alexander every day at second base. Play Jeffrey Hammonds every day in right field (and leave him there). Leave Scott Klingenbeck in the rotation and find out whether he'll ever be more than a guy who just gives you a chance to win. Call up Brian Sackinsky, Jimmy Haynes, Mark Smith, Alex Ochoa, find out what they can do. Find out whether they can help.

ASHBURN, Va. -- Often second-guessed for a lack of imagination and success on draft day, Washington Redskins general manager Charley Casserly went on a first-round trading binge yesterday that left him with the marquee player he wanted, three first-round draft picks next season and a net gain of three draft selections.Casserly silenced his critics at least temporarily by bringing in an immediate-impact player in triple-threat Georgia cornerback Champ Bailey and building for the future with the three first-round choices and the three lower-round picks gained.

Darrell Green is still the cornerstone of the Washington Redskins. The cornerback for all ages says he'll be playing in the Pro Bowl in the year 2000, and few are willing to bet against him even though Green will be 40 by then. However, Washington's other starting cornerback, Cris Dishman, is stirring up defensive excitement after playing just four regular-season games.Dishman is a hot item around Washington (3-1) as the team prepares to meet the Philadelphia Eagles (1-3) 1 p.m. today at Veterans Stadium.
