When murky, rust-colored water flowed from taps at Liberty High School after Memorial Day weekend, school maintenance officials scratched their heads looking for the cause. They tested the water at neighboring residences and at a water station near the Eldersburg school, fearing the problem might be widespread. All the tests came up negative. But water pipes in the school had a problem, they discovered.A 500-foot section of galvanized pipe running from the water main to the school maintenance room was corroding, releasing rust and sediment into the school's water system.

My lucky bamboo plant has a yellow discoloration spot on its stalk. From previous experience, I know it will rot soon. How can I prevent this? Usually maintained in water with no soil, lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is more closely related to lilies than bamboo. Try to improve cultural conditions. Mineral additives in the water are often a culprit. Avoid water with fluoride and chlorine, or let chlorine evaporate from water overnight before using. Change water every 15 to 30 days. Avoid temperature extremes or sudden changes, such as opening doors.

My daughter and her husband make their own formulation of colloidal silver. They think this mixture protects them against the flu and other infections because it provides a natural boost to the immune system. My concern is that they give it to their children, a boy age 2 and a girl age 7. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. Sign me a concerned grandmother. Colloidal silver is frequently promoted as a natural infection-fighter, capable of killing hundreds of bacteria and viruses.

Think 'PRICE." That's the easy way to remember how to give first aid for strains and sprains that are inevitable in any sport: P: Protect the athlete and injury from further trauma. R: Rest the area to avoid more damage and foster healing. I: Ice the area to reduce swelling and pain. C: Compress the area by securing an ice bag with an elastic wrap - but not tight enough to alter blood circulation. E: Elevate the injury above the heart level to keep blood from pooling in the area. If swelling, discoloration and pain do not lessen, get your athlete checked out by a doctor.

Choose potatoes with smooth, firm skin. Avoid potatoes with soft spots, greenish tints and punctured surfaces. If potatoes develop sprounts or green patches, trim them before cooking. Store potatoes in a cool, dark and dry storage area with good ventilation. Do not put potatoes in the refrigerator. Potatoes stored below 40 degrees will begin converting starch to sugar, making the potatoes taste sweeter and causing them to darken when cooked. When boiling potatoes, make sure all the potatoes are the same size so they will cook evenly.

A tree service recently looked at one of our trees and said it had cankers. Can you explain what a tree canker is and what causes them? If you have a dead area of tissue on a tree leaf, it is called a leaf spot or blight. A comparable area on a tree branch or trunk is called a canker; it is often sunken and discolored. Diseases cause most cankers, but there may be other reasons. For example, if a tree trunk were hit by a lawn mower, some of the tissue would be killed. This damaged area would technically be a canker.
