Orioles second baseman Robert Andino, is slated to be activated from the disabled list before Tuesday's game. He said he played in his two minor league rehab games without pain in his left shoulder. “Did a little bit of sliding and everything, swinging hard, ground balls,” Andino said. “No pain, so we'll see how it goes.” Andino said he would test his shoulder in batting practice before Tuesday night's game against the Yankees. Barring a setback, he could return to the starting lineup for Wednesday afternoon's series finale in the Bronx.

NEW YORK - Orioles designated hitter Jim Thome will be put on the disabled list with neck spasms, Orioles manger Buck Showalter said on Tuesday. Second baseman Robert Andino has rejoined the club and will replace Thome on the roster. Andino is available to play in Tuesday night's game. Thome returned to Baltimore for an MRI on his neck on Tuesday morning. After the procedure revealed a herniated disk, Thome plans to fly to California for an epidural, probably either on Wednesday or Thursday.

NEW YORK - The Orioles suddenly find themselves with a logjam at second base after they reactivated Robert Andino from the disabled list on Tuesday. Andino, the starter for most of the season, now will compete with Omar Quintanilla for time at the position. And that leaves Ryan Flaherty in limbo. Quintanilla, who got the start at second base Tuesday, has been red hot since joining the club in Andino's absence. In his first 10 games with the Orioles, he batted .429, and he delivered a two-run single with two outs in Tuesday's second inning.

Former Oriole Luke Scott, who is on the Tampa Bay Rays' disabled list with a strained oblique, was at Camden Yards on Tuesday -- his second series back since signing a free-agent deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. And he said he hopes his old team -- and his new one -- can stay in playoff contention all season. "This is such a great baseball town, so I think it is great," said Scott, who played four seasons with the Orioles and was Most Valuable Oriole in 2010. "I'm really happy for them.

Brian's Baseball Bash - a fundraiser for the University of Maryland Children's Hospital hosted by Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts - has been canceled for the second straight year, organizers announced Friday. The event has been canceled "due to uncertainty around Brian's availability and condition after his recent injury," according to a news release. Ticket holders are being contacted by the hospital. Roberts is on the disabled list with a labral tear in his right hip and is considering surgery that would end his season.

MINNEAPOLIS - Brad Bergesen received the phone call right as he began dozing off around 12:30 Tuesday morning. That's when Triple-A Norfolk manager Ron Johnson phoned to tell the right-hander to come pick up his bag for an early-morning flight to Minnesota. The Orioles purchased the contract of the 26-year-old Bergesen before Tuesday's game to provide support to a taxed bullpen that has thrown 22 2/3 innings over the four games since the All-Star break. The move gave the bullpen a right-handed arm that could serve in a long relief role behind left-handed starter Zach Britton on Tuesday night.

The Orioles announced Thursday night that outfielder Xavier Avery has been sent down to Triple-A Norfolk. Although they have not announced a corresponding move, left fielder Endy Chavez, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is expected to come off the disabled list Friday. The Orioles don't want the 22-year-old Avery, who has hit .233 with a .317 on-base percentage in 24 games in three stints with the club, to be a fourth outfielder in the majors. They'd rather have him play every day. Steve Pearce and Chris Davis likely will serve as reserve outfielders.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he's hoping to get right fielder Nick Markakis (wrist surgery), catcher Taylor Teagarden (back) and outfielder Endy Chavez (hamstring) back after the All-Star break. All three could head to Double-A Bowie for rehab assignments by the weekend. Teagarden, who has been out since spring training, caught a Gulf Coast League game today and will join the Baysox on Thursday. Markakis and Chavez could head to Bowie by Friday. Teagarden's impending return is an interesting one. It appears he would join the team immediately once he's ready physically, signaling the end of Ronny Paulino's time with the Orioles.

The Orioles are placing second baseman Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain, manager Buck Showalter said before Tuesday's game against the Mariners. Roberts was out of the lineup Monday with groin soreness and the Orioles were awaiting results of an MRI up until 90 minutes before game time Tuesday. Since early Tuesday afternoon, Showalter had two lineups written out. Roberts, who missed nearly 13 months recovering from multiple concussions, played just 17 games before landing on the DL again.

Finally, the Orioles have another outfielder in the outfield. On Thursday, the club promoted Xavier Avery from Triple-A Norfolk when first baseman Nick Johnson was placed on the disabled list with a strained right wrist. Avery, who hit .217 in a 15-game stint with the Orioles from May 13 to May 29, was immediately inserted into the starting lineup, batting second and playing left field. "You never know what to expect, but I'm very happy to be back and be back playing up here," said Avery, who hit .268 with 18 extra base hits and 16 stolen bases for the Tides.
