It would be an understatement to say that Annapolis resident Phil Wrye's job with the minor-league Bowie Baysox involves doing a variety of tasks. Wrye is the director of marketing for the Baysox, the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and he's done a laundry list of tasks since joining the team in 1999. The Massachusetts native's job involves getting people to Prince George's Stadium to see the Baysox play, and Wrye will stop at nothing to do that. The 31-year-old has often helped pull the tarp during rain delays or threats of bad weather, and he has served as the on-field voice for Bowie's in-game promotions.

It sounds like a recipe for a carnival but all these things and more are waiting inside the walls of Maryland's five minor league ballparks, which strive to make baseball an experience rather than just a game. "The allure to our fans is that it's not just baseball anymore," says C.J. Johnson, senior director of marketing for the Hagerstown Suns, a New York Mets affiliate. "It's family entertainment that is fun, enjoyable and affordable."

Adair Sutton, former director of marketing for Harborplace and the Gallery, died of cancer Nov. 1 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Butler resident was 52. Born Anne Adair Fogarty in Baltimore and raised in Butler, she was a graduate of the old Hannah More Academy and in 1975 earned her bachelor's degree in communications from what is now Towson University. "She was masterful in her coordination of people and ideas," said Cathy Case, former director of retail marketing for the old Rouse Co. "She was a wonderful ambassador and so proud of Baltimore.

He is, in the words of an expert, one of only 10 marketable players in the NBA. He was the cover boy for Sports Illustrated's year-in-review issue in 2003, his smiling face peering over the words "So Young, So Good..." He has signed big-dollar deals with Nike and EA Sports and Hallmark and Radio Shack and Got Milk, with the promise of more to come. But considering incidents that have cast him in a negative light since last summer, including his appearance on a homemade DVD in which alleged drug dealers speak of doing harm to people who cooperate with police, has Baltimore's Carmelo Anthony sullied his image?
