Diana Beuchert rode in on a white Andalusian, its silky coat radiating a sparkle that matched her flowing, 18th-century-style wedding dress. Suddenly, the tractor pull, the pig races and the aroma of funnel cake were no longer the big draws at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair last Saturday. Beuchert, a horse trainer and owner of a Mount Airy-based equestrian theater that features the Spanish-born horses, seemed to have the limelight to herself. "Wowwwwww!" exclaimed a group of teenage girls looking at the 6-foot train on Beuchert's satin-and-lace dress that covered the horse's backside.

When Princess Diana walked through the front door at Kensington Palace, chef Darren McGrady instantly knew she was very unhappy. She slammed the door, which was not at all like her, and stormed into the kitchen where he was making a meal for her and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. She burst into angry tears. "I hate those paparazzi!" she sputtered. McGrady, Princess Diana's personal chef for four years - from the time of her split-up with Prince Charles in 1993 until her death in 1997 - was often privy to her thoughts and feelings that could pour out during a heated moment like this one, as well as when she just wanted to talk and would chat at the kitchen table.

Can it be true that the now free-as-a-bird Paris Hilton is telling people that her "Uncle Warren" got in touch with her and said he hoped she'd get out and stump for Hillary Clinton, luring other young people to get up off their couches and vote? Could Paris have actually meant she'd been talking to Warren Beatty, the political activist, fond father, excellent husband of Annette and star-director-producer of movies himself? We hear that Warren did influence one young star to go on to better things.

The publication of Tina Brown's new biography of Princess Diana, The Diana Chronicles, coming as it does on the heels of Paris Hilton's bizarre jailhouse theater, serves to remind us that, once upon a time, we had much more interesting princesses. The cult of celebrity and the breathless coverage of beautiful, wealthy people with no discernible purpose on this earth has certainly found its nadir with vacuous Paris, who told Larry King that she found God and serious purpose while behind bars for driving without a license.

Is Deena Jones Diana Ross? Are the Dreamettes really the Supremes? Dreamgirls, the much-buzzed-about movie version of the 1981 hit Broadway musical, doesn't say so flat out. But the costumes in the film (in theaters nationally Christmas Day) -- from the many extravagant gowns to those used for the transformation of the once-meek lead character into a fabulous, fashionable diva -- say it all too well. LONDON -- The 1997 Paris car crash that killed Princess Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, was an accident, not a murder plot hatched by the royal family, according to a British police investigation made public yesterday. "There was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of the car. This was a tragic accident," said John Stevens, former chief of the Metropolitan Police who led the three-year investigation. The inquiry's 832-page report also concluded that Princess Diana was not pregnant at the time of her death, nor did she have any intention of marrying Fayed even though he had purchased an engagement ring on the day of their death.
