Thursday's news that defenseman Casey Carroll will not play this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee is somewhat of a blow to the national title aspirations of Duke. Carroll, a redshirt senior who served five years as an Army Ranger after playing for the Blue Devils from 2004-07, was expected to fortify a unit that had graduated starter Michael Manley after last season. But Duke has a number of candidates who can immediately step in, including junior Luke Duprey, senior Bill Conners and freshman Jamie Ikeda.

After its stunning, 27-point loss at Miami on Wednesday night, Duke is going to have additional motivation Saturday against Maryland. It was a busy night for the Angel of Death on the latest episode of "American Horror Story. "  The last time we saw the merciful Angel, she was coming to Monsignor Timothy Howard's rescue after he was nailed to a cross. But she didn't come to relieve the monsignor of his life. “You have more work to do,” she tells him. “The devil is at Briarcliff and the nun has to cast her out.” Instead the monsignor casts the devil out himself by throwing the demonized Mary Eunice three floors to her death.

Venus Theatre owner Deb Randall has done it again with another insightful and entertaining production, "Devil Dog Six," that she not only directs and produces but stars in as well. Randall and five other actors play numerous roles in the show, from trainers and jockeys to horses that neigh, stomp and race around a circular platform in high-stakes races played out on stage. The play, which runs through Oct. 28 at the C Street theater, takes the audience on a dramatic journey, where the supernatural, a bit of mystery and themes of racism, sexism and gambling addiction come to life in often-times explosive ways.

Steve Wojciechowski still looks like the pugnacious point guard who came out of Cardinal Gibbons nearly two decades ago and proved those wrong who said he wouldn't make an impact at Duke. He's spent the past 13 years as an assistant and now associate head coach wunder the legendary Mike Krzyzewski and the past six helping Krzyzewski's staff for the U.S. Olympic team. In describing his role with the national team, Wojciechowski said he, fellow Duke associate coach Chris Collins and Syracuse associate head coach Mike Hopkins help prepare scouting reports on upcoming opponents as well as get on the court during practice to run drills for the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

John Haus hasn't heard from his younger brother this week. Of course, the Maryland men's lacrosse midfielder hasn't exactly tried to reach out to him either. No hard feelings. It's just the nature of sports. "It's game week," said Will Haus, a freshman starting on Duke's defensive midfield, "so there's not much talking going on. " John's Terps will face Will's Blue Devils in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament Saturday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
