The Pistons not only lost their preseason opener in Miami, they also lost forward Jonas Jerebko and guard Terrico White to serious injuries. Jerebko, who averaged 9.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 73 starts last season, will miss five to six months with a ruptured Achilles' tendon. White, a second-round draft pick, broke a bone in his right foot and will have surgery Friday along with Jerebko. • Dwyane Wade 's ailing right hamstring was no better a day after his debut was cut, but he expects to travel with the Heat to (but not play in)

MIAMI - They will wonder about the "could-have-beens." They will ponder the "what-ifs." In the end, a season of incredible accomplishment and unprecedented joy will be haunted by heartache for the Miami Heat. Last night, Miami's season of dreams came to a premature end, the combination of Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade not enough to catapult the Heat past the Detroit Pistons and into the NBA Finals. In the final two minutes of the game, the Pistons outscored the Heat 12-4, turning a one-point deficit into an 88-82 victory, claiming the Eastern Conference finals, four games to three, and earning a return trip to the Finals, where they will defend their 2004 title against the San Antonio Spurs.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - If ever there was going to be a blowup moment for Rasheed Wallace, Sunday night seemed to be it. His Detroit Pistons had been booted all over Continental Airlines Arena by the New Jersey Nets in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, 82-64, and it wasn't even that close. And Wallace, who spent most of the night in foul trouble, had just 10 points, missing all five three-point attempts, with just two rebounds and three turnovers in 22 minutes. With a phalanx of reporters and cameramen hovering around his locker room space, this seemed like a great time for the seemingly always-volatile Wallace to blow, but the big explosion never came.

UP: Tim Duncan The mild-mannered two-time Most Valuable Player drew a one-game suspension for inadvertently knocking down an official. That's bound to do wonders for his street cred. DOWN: Jack Nies The referee in question, who should have known better than to get in the way of a pick. And giving Duncan a technical for such an obvious accident was a weasel move. UP: Denver Nuggets If the season ended right now, the Nuggets would be in the playoffs, Jeff Bzdelik would be Coach of the Year and Carmelo Anthony would be Rookie of the Year.

DETROIT PISTONS* WHEN: Tonight, 7:30.* WHERE: The Palace, Auburn Hills, Mich.* TV/RADIO: Channel 20, WMAL-AM 1500.* OUTLOOK: After a strong run that carried them into third place in the Atlantic Division, the Bullets (18-23) are hurting. They lost two straight home games to mediocre teams (Indiana and Dallas). The Pistons (30-13) have problems of their own, though not as severe as the Bullets. The defending NBA champions are in a virtual tie with Chicago for the Central Division lead, but have lost All-Star guard Isiah Thomas for at least the rest of the regular season, and possibly for the playoffs, following wrist surgery.
