It was far from a stellar year for Eastern Conference teams last season. Outside of the Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers, the play was relatively weak compared with the West. It was so dTC bad that the Boston Celtics finished 12 games under .500 and still were able to gain the final playoff spot.Though a losing team again might gain a postseason berth, activity during recent weeks by the Washington Bullets and Philadelphia 76ers -- the two worst teams in the East last season -- points to a shift in power among the lower-level teams.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Pervis Ellison ended 1991 with a crash and started the new year with a bang.Involved in an auto accident en route to the Capital Centre on Monday night that kept him out of the game with the San Antonio Spurs, the Bullets center bounced back last night with a 31-point, 15-rebound performance to lead Washington to a 112-108 victory over the New Jersey Nets at the Meadowlands. The Bullets (12-18), who have won six of their past seven games, barely hung on, as the Nets cut an eight-point deficit to 107-106 with 59 seconds left.

A year ago, the Philadelphia 76ers were the surprise team in the NBA, buoyed by a 10-0 start. Eventual Most Valuable Player Allen Iverson, Coach of the Year Larry Brown and team president Pat Croce were the catalysts behind an early-season push that would land the Sixers in the Finals. A year later, the Sixers are again the surprise team in the NBA, but for different reasons. They are floundering below .500, with only Miami, Atlanta and Chicago catching their fall to the Eastern Conference basement.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Washington Bullets will beat a good Miami Heat team one night only to lose the next two to the Boston Celtics and the expansion Toronto Raptors. Or they'll play to within a basket of the Orlando Magic, and then follow that up with a lousy effort.Such a lousy effort came last night against the New Jersey Nets, who defeated the Bullets, 89-84, before 10,716 at the Meadowlands Arena to end a four-game losing streak and continue an opening month of highs and lows for Washington.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With the first month of the season nearly over, it's hard to put a finger on the Washington Bullets. On one hand they can beat a good team like the Miami Heat, and compete with solid teams such as the New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic. On the other hand, they lose to teams that they should be beating. That was the case last night against the New Jersey Nets, a team that had lost four straight. And yet for much of the night the Bullets struggled, and eventually lost, 89-84, at the Meadowlands Arena.

They just went out and signed the best young third baseman in Perth.Fact: In 1990, the average game attendance in the American League was almost 2,000 higher than in the National League.

BOWIE -- Alone on a fast break during his first day back at practice, Washington Bullets forward Chris Webber did something unusual. Instead of slamming the ball with his right hand or with two hands, he went in with his left -- immediately testing the left shoulder he dislocated during the preseason."
