ARLINGTON, TEXAS -- Perhaps it was an omen when the Orioles' first loss of the season came on a three-hitter at the hands of a lefty starter. Entering last night's game, the club was batting 94 points lower against left-handers than against right-handers. And that was before Texas Rangers rookie John Koronka became the latest left-hander to bedevil the Orioles. And second baseman Mark DeRosa homered off Orioles reliever John Halama to give the Rangers a 2-1 win before a crowd of 23,783 at Ameriquest Field.

The indelible image from Camden Yards yesterday should have been pitcher Matt Riley's slow walk from the mound in the seventh inning, his team ahead by six runs, the crowd on its feet for a prolonged ovation, a dugout full of coaches and teammates waiting to congratulate him. That's how the Orioles wanted to remember the game as they boarded a flight to Kansas City. Not the slow meltdown in the eighth. Not the scratch hits and defensive lapses. Not an angry manager, a near-silent clubhouse, another lost series.
