Loyola's satisfaction over playing with a full starting lineup lasted just one game. After pounding then-No. 8 Ohio State, 9-4, on March 30 with its full complement of starters, the team took care of Fairfield, 13-7, last Saturday without freshman attackman Zach Herreweyers. Herreweyers had started in the No. 10 Greyhounds' last four contests, but was not dressed for Saturday's victory. Coach Charley Toomey wouldn't say what was ailing Herreweyers. “We're all fighting something,” he said.

Reigning national champion Loyola has won seven of its first nine contests this season, but both of the team's losses have occurred against ranked opponents. The No. 15 Greyhounds (7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference) get a chance to change that trend when they pay a visit to No. 8 and league rival Ohio State (6-2, 1-1) this Saturday. The showdown with the Buckeyes will kick off a three-game stretch in which Loyola will meet conference foes in Ohio State, Fairfield (6-3, 2-0)

The six-goal performance marked Berg's fifth hat trick of the season and eighth of his career. An offseason of losses gave way to a big Ravens gain Sunday night as they announced that they have agreed in principle on a five-year deal with former Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil. Dumervil, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who had 63 ½ sacks and 16 forced fumbles in six seasons with the Broncos, will be at the Ravens' facility Tuesday to take a physical and - if all goes well - to sign a contract. “I think this move is awesome,” Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs told The Baltimore Sun. “It shows we're still in the business of winning and we have the best [general manager]

Welcome back to Morning Shootaround, a regular feature this season the day after Maryland basketball games. We will recap what was said in the news conference afterward by Maryland coach Mark Turgeon and his players. We will give some of our own insight into what transpired on the court during the previous day's game and what the Terps will be working on at practice looking ahead to their next game. Maryland 62, Denver 52 @ Comcast Center Tuesday night (NIT second round) As Maryland was about to fall behind by nine points midway through the second half, a fan sitting behind press row yelled sarcastically at Turgeon, “Let's see what you got, Coach.” Another chimed in, “What would Gary do?

There were sure to be all kinds of challenges during this long season, so why not a game that tested Maryland's fortitude -- and its patience -- with its postseason survival at stake against an unheralded team maddeningly well schooled in the Princeton offense? After another slow start, second-seeded Maryland -- and particularly Dez Wells -- had to dig deep to come back and defeat Denver, 62-52, on Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.

COLLEGE PARK - As the televisions in Maryland's locker room showed fans at Robert Morris storming the court after their team upset Kentucky in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night, the Terps seemed to differ in their reactions. Some were happy that one of the top seeds in the 32-team field had been eliminated, as was Atlantic Coast Conference rival Florida State. Others were upset that the potential for two payback games - against the Wildcats and Seminoles - was now gone as well.

No. 3 Denver is hoping to have freshman Gordie Koerber (Gilman) back for Saturday's game against No. 8 Notre Dame in the Whitman's Sampler Mile High Classic, but senior faceoff specialist Chase Carraro will remain inactive. In Koerber remains out, coach Bill Tierney is confident in Colin Scott and Eric Adamson as fill-ins. Carraro has an injury, and the medical staff does not want to force his return. The faceoff specialist from Louisville, Ky., was a second-team All-American last year and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Specialist of the Year.

College lacrosse is beginning - albeit slowly - to regain its reputation as the fastest sport on two feet. New rules implemented in the offseason to accelerate the pace of play aren't showing up in the numbers. But anecdotally, what had devolved at times into a slow-plodding, low-scoring slog is turning into a fast-paced, action-packed thriller. "I think they're the best thing to ever happen to the game, to be honest with you," Denver coach Bill Tierney said. "The [NCAA] rules committee took charge of their charge, so to speak, and realized that the game was not getting any better.
