TRENTON, N.J. -- The BayRunners, who lost their International Basketball League debut Friday night at home to the Shooting Stars, are in danger of making a habit of it, falling again to Trenton last night, 111-108.The Shooting Stars led by 19 in the fourth quarter before the BayRunners rallied within 105-100 with 1: 56 to go on a three-pointer by Kurk Lee (Towson State). Two baskets by the Stars' Dennis Edwards put the game out of reach before Rodney Elliott (Maryland, Dunbar) made the score appear close with the game's final four points on a free throw and three-point shot at the buzzer.

It's hard to imagine No. 1-ranked Dunbar shot poorly (31 of 89) and still defeated Annapolis, 80-61, Saturday night at Annapolis. The Poets (15-1) were led by Keith Alexander's 23 points. Michael Lloyd had 21, Donta Bright 15 and Keith Booth 13. More important, Alexander, Bright and Booth combined for 34 rebounds as the Poets held a 55-29 edge in rebounding.Dennis Edwards, a recent victim of flu, led Annapolis (11-2) with 21 points, but played infrequently after scoring 11 points in the first quarter.

ANNAPOLIS -- Annapolis has been an up-and-down team in recent weeks. The Panthers were quite a bit of both last night, but survived a near-disastrous collapse in the waning minutes of regulation before dropping visiting and second-ranked Southern (Baltimore), 92-87, in overtime. The No. 4 Panthers (16-3), who led most of the way, wasted a seven-point lead on turnovers and a technical foul in the last three minutes of regulation time. That enabled Southern (13-5) to rally and tie at 79 on David Cason's shot from 23 feet at the buzzer.

Even without county scoring leader Dennis Edwards, Annapolis had more than enough firepower last night to shoot past host Severna Park, 87-65, in a physical Anne Arundel County 4A League game that at times resembled the football showdowns between the two archrivals.No. 3 Annapolis (4-0, 3-0 league) won in part because Richard Naylor stepped in to score 21 points and grab 14 rebounds in place of Edwards, averaging 35 points, who had been suspended after a minor violation of school policy. The Panthers also took much better care of the ball than did Severna Park, which committed 37 turnovers in its new up-tempo offense, and shut down the Falcons with a 1-3-1 zone defense in the third quarter.
