Calvert Hall's football team scored 84 points in its first two games this season, but the No. 2 Cardinals had a lot more trouble getting on the board Friday night against DeMatha. Three Calvert Hall turnovers, penalties and a punt snapped over the Cardinals punter's head had a lot to do with that as the Stags took a 23-14 victory in the 9/11 Patriot Classic at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The Cardinals (2-1) didn't score until the third quarter, but they pulled within 20-14 on Colar Kuhns' quarterback sneak with 9:07 left in the game.

DeMatha, featuring Crofton resident Todd Beckerman (119, 126-1) and ranked No. 3 by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, had a disappointing third-place finish at the weekend's Arundel Tournament after being first a year earlier. But the Stags' effort must be put in perspective when weighed against a few factors that were beyond control of the team but that affected it, nevertheless.A key wrestler received a gun shot wound in his foot on Thursday night -- one night before the tournament's first round.
