The Ravens surely took note Thursday when the Detroit Lions released veteran wide receiver Nate Burleson and veteran safety Louis Delmas to free up salary cap space before the start of free agency. Those two could potentially be the style of players they are looking for at a couple of need positions. But just as important, looking beyond the Xs and Os at dollars and cents, they fit the profile of players they have targeted in the past, specifically last offseason. Last year, the Ravens targeted players who were cut by their teams in an effort to maximize the number of compensatory picks they would receive this offseason.

William C. Weisbecker, a retired Bethlehem Steel worker who earlier served in the Navy, died of congestive heart failure Friday at a daughter's home in Mount Wolf, Pa. He was 89. Mr. Weisbecker, who was affectionately called "Wisey," was born in Dundalk. He attended Sparrows Point High School, where he excelled in basketball, baseball, golf, track and field, and soccer. He was eventually inducted into the Greater Dundalk Sports Hall of Fame, according to his daughter Lisa Biehl. Mr. Weisbecker entered the Navy upon graduating from high school in 1943.

Delma Block Brotman, who had worked with her first husband in their northwest Baltimore drugstore, died at the North Oaks Retirement Community yesterday of heart failure. She was 82.Graveside services for Mrs. Brotman were being held today at the Arlington Cemetery of Chizuk Amuno Congregation, 4300 N. Rogers Ave.A member of Hadassah, she was active in its book review group.The former Delma Herman was a native of Baltimore and a member of the Class of 1927 at Western High School.Her first husband, pharmacist Sol G. Block, died in 1956.

Delma Kreidwise, a homemaker and former Northeast Baltimore resident, died of undetermined causes April 2 at Valerie Manor Health Care Center in Torrington, Conn. She was 98.A Torrington resident since 1987, the former Delma Conn was born in Baltimore and educated in city schools. She was married for many years to Jesse W. Kreidwise Sr., a former Baltimore Sun Co. route owner, who died in the 1960s.She had been an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Baltimore.Services were held Monday.

Delma Gordon, a retired social worker who wrote the words to the Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School song, died Tuesday of a pulmonary ailment at Northwest Hospital Center. She was 76 and lived on Ellamont Street.As a member of Dunbar's first graduating class in 1940, she wrote words to the song that was sung by the students who received their diplomas at the school's original location in East Baltimore. The song is still sung at school functions.In the days of racial segregation, Dunbar was the city's second all-black high school, attended by students who lived in East Baltimore.
