After dropping both games of last weekend's 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden, the Maryland men's basketball team chalked up its trip to New York as a learning experience. The Terps vowed to fix their poor free-throw shooting, stay out of foul trouble and find a secondary option to lessen the burden on leading scorer Jordan Williams. In Tuesday's nonconference matchup with Delaware State, the Terps made good on all three promises, disposing of the Hornets, 72-54, before an announced 12,178 at Comcast Center.

Williams said that even though the Bears were down by three, they'd be just fine. The redshirt freshman then directed an 85-yard drive, capped by his 34-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Hendrix with 20 seconds left. Sheldon Jacques added another touchdown on a 2-yard fumble return as time ran out to give Morgan State a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday before an announced 14,312 at Hughes Stadium.

Despite some tentative performances in recent weeks by Maryland's freshmen, second-year coach Mark Turgeon said Friday that he had not lost faith in his first full recruiting class. On Saturday, Turgeon's confidence seemed justified. After a slow start against Delaware State at Comcast Center, the Terps were led out of their early afternoon slumber by freshman Charles Mitchell and the rest of a group ranked among the top 15 coming out of high school. Mitchell, who had totaled just six points in his past three games, scored 10 by halftime and finished with career-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds in leading Maryland to an easy 79-50 victory before an announced crowd of 12,389.

Ten down, two to go. A non-conference schedule that Maryland coach Mark Turgeon has said in hindsight was admittedly too soft nears its conclusion as the Terps inch closer to beginning their Atlantic Coast Conference season in another week. With 10 straight wins since opening the 2012-13 season with a three-point loss to then No. 3 Kentucky, Maryland (10-1) plays its third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent when it hosts Delaware State (5-7) Saturday at Comcast Center at 12:30 p.m. Coming off an eight-day break that followed one of their more competitive games - a 76-69 win over Stony Brook - the Terps will try to improve on some of their inconsistencies before opening their ACC schedule Jan. 5 at home against Virginia Tech.

Fourteen years ago on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, Mich., an 8-year old boy learned to be a football player. In the blistering heat of summer, the boy climbed and descended the concrete steps of Eastern Michigan's Rynearson Stadium, past empty bleachers as sweat dripped down his face. After, he would run route after route on the field, sprinting and chasing his older brother. As the young running back worked, his father watched, giving instruction. For years, through high school, the boy, Travis Davidson, would run those steps and those routes, never fully grasping why his father had him do this.

NO. 5 MARYLAND @GEORGE MASON Sunday, 2p.m. Tianna and Tierra Hawkins had been teammates for most of their lives. Except for the one summer when they were on separate Amateur Athletic Union teams, the fraternal twins from Clinton played together through their years at Riverdale Baptist High. In college, however, the sisters went their separate ways. Tianna ended up at Maryland, while Tierra went to Delaware State. Both have flourished. Tianna averages a doubledouble for the fifth-ranked Terrapins, and Tierra leads the Lady Hornets in scoring and rebounding.
