Jarret Johnson got the news Tuesday that defensive coordinator Greg Mattison was leaving the Ravens for a homecoming in Michigan. His first thought: "Please hire in-house. " Twenty-four hours later, after the Ravens promoted defensive backs coach Chuck Pagano to coordinator, the veteran linebacker got his wish. "In my opinion, Chuck is the most deserving," Johnson said. "But if they would have given it to Dean [Pees, linebackers coach], we'd have been just as happy. Arizona Cardinals defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson was taken to a hospital after fainting before the game Saturday night against the Dallas Cowboys, the Associated Press reported. Henderson, a former Ravens assistant, fainted while driving down the ramp into the team's parking lot and then hit a cement post, but he was alert and conscious as he was taken to an area hospital. Henderson, 53, who was born in Baltimore, began his NFL coaching career with the Ravens in 1999 as the assistant defensive backs coach until being promoted in 2000 to coach defensive backs.

Dave Brown, a defensive back who had 62 interceptions, tied for seventh in NFL history, died yesterday after suffering a heart attack while playing basketball at Texas Tech, the school said. He was 52. Brown, who had been an assistant coach at the school since 2001, won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers and also played with the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. A 1984 All-Pro selection, he holds the Seattle record with 50 interceptions. He tied an NFL record with two interception returns for touchdowns Nov. 4, 1984.

The friendship that bloomed between Ravens coach John Harbaugh and the Minnesota Vikings' Brad Childress was rooted in the meeting rooms and hallways of the Philadelphia Eagles' training facility when both men toiled as assistant coaches for Andy Reid. But that relationship was further enhanced outside the Eagles' building when the duo took part in long-distance runs during lunchtime. "I'd say we've shared a lot of the same kind of ideas about football over the years," Harbaugh recalled.
