Elizabeth J. Gammie is not dead. I haven't known her long, but I'm going to vouch for her. Standing before me on a recent afternoon, her cheeks looked rosy and her hand felt warm and soft when we shook. The almost 81-year-old Parkville resident was heading out to play a mean game of cards with friends. Just to make sure it wasn't a body double, I inspected her passport and Maryland driver's license to make sure she really is who she says she is. Short of a DNA test, I was convinced. But I digress.

Absent from U.S. media encomia for recently deceased former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze is any mention of the historic deal he reached with his U.S. counterpart James Baker in 1990 ensuring that the Soviet empire would collapse "with a whimper, not a bang" (Mr. Baker's words). Mr. Baker keeps repeating that the Cold War "could not have ended peacefully without Shevardnadze. " But he and others are silent on the quid pro quo . The quid was Moscow's agreement to swallow the bitter pill of a reunited Germany in NATO; the quo was a U.S. promise not to "leapfrog" NATO over Germany farther East.

The Q: The dead may read no mail, but tons of letters are still mailed to deceased people every day. It's a problem reader George Kilbourne is familiar with since he purchased a house from an estate in 1999. Recently he received a check from Avaya Inc. that was addressed to the departed couple. The couple had no children. "I have not opened it," Kilbourne said. "I know it is a check because I can see the words, `Pay to the order of,' through the address window on the envelope. "I asked my financial adviser where to turn and he doesn't know," Kilbourne said.

A memorial service was held late Friday - the longest night of the year - at the Inner Harbor to honor the more than 100 homeless men and women who died this year in Baltimore. The ceremony, in its 22nd year, was also intended to raise awareness for the struggles of the homeless, said Adam Schneider, spokesman for Healthcare for the Homeless. He said men and women who are homeless are three to four times more likely to die prematurely than those with a home. The average age of a homeless individual at death is 47. The names of those who died were read aloud for the roughly 150 people in attendance, and a candle was lit in honor of each of the deceased.

Two people whom police believe were not wearing their seat belts were killed and three others were injured Friday night in a single-car crash in Elkridge. Howard County police say a 2008 Pontiac GT with five occupants crashed into a tree around 8:05 p.m. in the 6200 block of Lawyer's Hill Road. The vehicle was traveling westbound when the driver lost control, crossed the eastbound lanes and struck a tree. Police said speed appeared to be a factor in the accident. The front passenger, Jeffrey Ryan Giles, 19, of Linthicum, was pronounced dead at the scene.

I don't know whose idea it was to move the obituaries to the page after the sports coverage and just prior to the classified section. I find this placement quite insulting to the families who have lost their loved ones and want them to be commemorated. Its like y'all are trying to hide the fact that people die in this county. It's a fact of life and you can't get away from it. I would suggest that you select a much more appropriate section of the newspaper, either just before or just after the neighborhood columns.

Howard Community College leaders dedicated the school's renovated library Monday, with Board of Trustees chairman James Truby calling it the "new and improved hub" of the school. The $19 million project took three years to complete, resulting in upgraded study space, technology and laboratories. The revamped facility is named after the late state Sen. James Clark Jr. of Howard County. Originally called the Learning Resources Center, the building was the first to be built at the college.
