The hype had been building all day - colorful T-shirts and jerseys adorned on festival-goers, large mouseheads proudly on display - and at 9:20 p.m., the West Stage was filled with fans and their glowsticks. They had come for deadmau5 (pronounced "Dead Mouse"), the Canadian DJ who stands at the top of an elaborate stage set-up and plays thumping, bass-driven electronic music. He DJed the MTV Video Music Awards last year, and his sort-of cute, very creepy mouse-head has made him an international superstar of dance music.

Details are scarce (actually, make that non-existent), but it's been confirmed to Midnight Sun that the Virgin Mobile FreeFest will return for its seventh year, according to spokeswoman Audrey Fix Schaefer. For the fourth straight year, it will take place at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. The performance line-up and date are still to be announced. Last year's FreeFest was headlined by garage-rock-heroes the Black Keys and EDM-dude-in-the-mask Deadmau5, and it drew the festival's largest crowd to date - roughly 50,000 people.

But, with a one-day festival like Virgin Mobile FreeFest, some overlap is expected.  Last year, poor M.I.A. went up against LCD Soundsystem. How was HFstival this weekend? Were there as many bugs as during FreeFest ? Did the Avett Brothers make it at least worthwhile? There are no festivals in Baltimore this weekend, but there are a handful of excellent shows. And Deadmau5 is performing in the area again. I'm looking forward to The Walkmen at Merriweather, who are opening for Fleet Foxes. Elsewhere, there is: Moby at the Hippodrome (of all places), Big in Japan at Ottobar, Matmos, a Height with Friends tour kick-off show, Wilco and Brad Paisley.
