Skies should clear enough tonight for a view of the Orionid meteor shower. It returns each autumn as the Earth sweeps through debris left behind by Halley's Comet. The shower peaked this morning but remains at high levels for several days. You could see as many as 23 per hour far from urban lighting. They're fast, often bright, and half of them leave persistent trains. Look east after 10 p.m., but better between midnight and dawn, as the moon sets and the constellation Orion rises high overhead.

The weather in Florida looked promising today for a sunrise launch of NASA's Dawn mission to explore the mysterious dwarf planet Ceres and the giant asteroid Vesta. Liftoff from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was expected as early as 7:20 a.m., just seven minutes after sunrise. The Delta II rocket and its nine strap-on boosters are to carry the unmanned spacecraft to a 100-mile-high Earth orbit in just nine minutes. About an hour later, Dawn's third stage is to ignite to push the 1,600-pound spacecraft on its way toward the asteroid belt, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

They were pioneers, among the first students to be racially integrated as kindergartners in Baltimore's public schools. Fifty years later, what the former students of Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary (Public School No. 18) remembered was the smell -- and taste -- of paste, old Ms. Buisick, the coatroom they'd hide in before classes, the old drive-in theater across the street. And the Mussenden twins. No one had forgotten Christine and Caryl Mussenden, the vivacious duo who, it seemed, were friends with everyone.

"Inspired" by a dark chapter in American history, September Dawn presents a ham-fisted cautionary tale of religious fanaticism that would have been hooted out of even 19th-century theaters as melodrama of the most lurid kind. On Sept. 11, 1857, a band of Mormon zealots attacked a wagon train of 120 settlers heading for California. The ensuing slaughter that took place in the Utah pass known as Mountain Meadows is largely undisputed history. But other questions about the raid -- especially whether members of the Mormon hierarchy, possibly even church leader Brigham Young, ordered it -- have been hotly debated.

If Dieter Dengler hadn't already existed, he would be exactly the sort of character who might have sprung from the fertile imagination of Werner Herzog. Shot down over Laos in 1966, the German-born U.S. fighter pilot endured months in a brutal prisoner-of-war camp before escaping and - more amazingly - surviving an ordeal that left him at the mercy of the Southeast Asian jungles. Rescue Dawn (MGM) Starring Christian Bale, Steve Zahn. Written and directed by Werner Herzog. Rated PG-13.

NASA scientists hope to celebrate Independence Day a few days late this year, with a spectacular launch of the Dawn mission Saturday -- the world's first flight to the mysterious dwarf planet Ceres and the asteroid Vesta. It is an ambitious enterprise -- the first from Earth to orbit two celestial bodies in succession. The journey is possible only because of Dawn's exotic ion-propulsion engine. Its astonishing efficiency will carry it 3 billion miles on less than 72 gallons of fuel.
