The whole basketball world knows about Muggsy Bogues now, but Baltimore knew about him first. From the time he was a diminutive youngster growing up on Orleans Street in East Baltimore, anybody who knew anything about basketball could see he was unique. As a mere lad living in the Lafayette Court housing project, he and best friend Reggie Williams engaged in memorable battles in rec ball against a Cecil Court team that featured David Wingate and Reggie Lewis. The four would be reunited on the Dunbar High School teams of the early 1980s that won 59 games in a row, then would become stars in college.

BOSTON -- The friendship had gone on for half their lives, dating to their days as 13-year-olds at the Cecil-Kirk Recreation Center in East Baltimore. It was a friendship that grew stronger as they played together at Dunbar High School and Northeastern University. Two weeks ago, Derrick Lewis called Reggie Lewis to see how he was coming along since the Boston Celtics captain was found to have a heart ailment in May and re-evaluated in June, when news of a neurological condition seemed to give him hope of playing again.

First came his old English teacher. Then his math teacher, followed by the school custodian and finally his guidance counselor. They waited politely in line to shake David Wingate's hand and revive memories of the time he had spent in their classrooms and as a member of the Dunbar High's national high school champions in the early 1980s."

The Howard County state's attorney says he will decide next week whether to drop rape charges against former Dunbar and San Antonio Spurs player David Wingate, since the woman who made the complaint has told a judge she does not want to proceed with the case.State's Attorney William Hymes said rape victims drop charges "very infrequently." But he said there was no evidence the woman was coerced into backing out of the case and said he was concerned about how a high-profile trial might affect her emotionally.

Dunbar High School and Georgetown University product David Wingate, who was re-signed by the San Antonio Spurs after rape charges were dropped against him in Howard County, was not at the Spurs' game against the Washington Bullets yesterday at the Capital Centre.Spurs coach Larry Brown said Wingate has an appointment with the NBA in New York tomorrow, to receive clearance to rejoin the team."I don't want to talk about it until it's settled," Brown said. But center David Robinson said the team can't wait to get Wingate back on the court: "He's got his personal life taken care of and things are starting to fall in place for him. He's a hard-nosed defender and if he comes in and does half of the things he did for us defensively last year, then he's going to do more than help us. We're excited about that," Robinson said.
