Dr. David Thomas Crawford, a retired surgeon and former medical director of Franklin Square Hospital Center, died of pneumonia Thursday at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland. The former Glen Arm resident was 74. Born in West Virginia and raised on a Patriot, Ohio, dairy farm, he earned a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College and was a 1958 graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. A surgeon, he practiced with Dr. Ross Z. Pierpont and Dr. Donald Hebb at an office on West Monument Street.

Herb & Soul began last September as a catering and carryout operation in the back part of a Parkville convenience store. The offerings included interesting Southern cuisine and soul food but also typical carryout items like cheese steaks and wings. The owners - Brandon Taylor, Yuriy Chernov and David Thomas, the executive chef - were encouraged enough by the neighborhood's response to think about expanding or even moving. They at one point considered a property in the Hollins Market neighborhood.

David Arquette and Thomas Jane will appear Sunday at the Senator Theatre for a showing of their movie, The Tripper, with all proceeds going to the theater's preservation fund. Arquette's directorial debut watches as a serial killer obsessed with President Ronald Reagan sets his sights on a concert that has drawn a group of latter-day twentysomething hippie-types. The group includes Jaime King, Elijah Wood, Balthazar Getty and Jason Mewes, while the concert's host is played by Paul Reubens.
