Leslie Vallade is a woman on a mission. As president of the new nonprofit Loch Raven Fireworks Foundation Inc., she said only a third of the $10,000 needed to stage the annual July 4 fireworks display at Loch Raven Technical Academy has been raised. But Vallade is undaunted in her efforts and confident that spectators from the dozens of nearby neighborhoods who attend the display will come through by donating the remaining $6,500 to cover its costs. It's "been very stressful.

Glascoe Austin Baker Sr., a retired Baltimore public school principal, died of lung cancer May 22 at St. Agnes Hospital. He was 83 and a resident of Charlestown Retirement Community. Born in Baltimore and raised on Etting Street, he was a 1939 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. His studies at what is now Coppin State University were interrupted by Army service in Scotland, France and Germany during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Coppin with a bachelor's degree in education.

"Inventions From Outer Space: Everyday Uses for NASA Technology" by David Baker (Random House, 128 pages, $25) Everybody -- well, almost everybody -- knows that the United States' sustained commitment to space flight and exploration has produced miracles. The least of them, in impact on daily life, may be the record of human feet leaving prints on the surface of the moon. Now comes this entertaining, clearly written and even more instructively illustrated inventory of the byproducts of space research.

Unlike the calculated expressions of feeling common to its human masters, there is nothing disingenuous about the way a dog praises, celebrates, frets or mourns. In this poem, David Baker gives us just such an endearing mutt. "Mongrel Heart" Up the dog bounds to the window, baying like a basset his doleful, tearing sounds from the belly, as if mourning a dead king, and now he's howling like a beagle - yips, brays, gagging growls - and scratching the sill paintless, that's how much he's missed you, the two of you, both of you, mother and daughter, my wife and child.

David Baker, a graduating senior from Centennial High School, has been awarded a $1,000 first-place scholarship by the Maryland Art League in its annual competition.He plans to continue his study of artat Virginia Polytechnic in Blacksburg.KIM WINS SCHOLARSHIPMary Kim, a student at Centennial High School, is one of four Maryland students awarded Goucher College Trustee scholarships, which offers full tuition, room and board.Kim is treasurer of the National Honor Society, a varsity cheerleader, a chorus and orchestra member, and a Sunday school teacher.
