Dave Trembley indicated he and pitching coach Rick Kranitz have talked about the possibility of going with a six-man rotation in September, which is great news for those of us who thought they were having trouble coming up with three. I've been itching to get a look at Bradley Bergesen for weeks, but the club might feel he has thrown enough pitches this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bob McCrory, since he is on the 40-man. I really didn't think of Dave Trembley as a particularly spiritual man until he waxed biblical after yesterday's game. "You reap what you sow," he said on the MASN post-game show about the outlook for some of the young pitchers. "The opportunities you get, you'll be evaluated accordingly." Now, I should have suspected Dave was a religious guy, since he says "Oh God!" whenever a ball is hit to Alex Cintron. (For more, go to baltimoresun.com/schmuckblog)

It's finally official. Brian Roberts will start tomorrow's exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins and Ed Smith Stadium. That should not come as a huge surprise, since word had leaked out early in the week that Friday probably would be the day, but Dave Trembley said the decision was finalized this morning. Trembley isn't speculating on what will happen after that. Roberts has said he intends to start playing every day upon his return, but the Orioles are taking it a day at a time.

How it happened: The Orioles' lone offense was provided by second baseman Ty Wigginton, who sent a Dallas Braden pitch off the face of the second deck in left field for a two-run homer. That cut the A's lead to 4-2, but the Orioles botched numerous chances to pull closer, hitting into inning-ending double plays in both the seventh and eighth innings. He said it: :"We're a much better ballclub than we've played. We have experienced, proven hitters that are right now going through a difficult time.

How it happened: The Orioles scored four runs in the sixth inning to back starter Brian Matusz, who allowed two runs in five innings, and Michael Gonzalez earned his first save of the season despite loading the bases with two outs in the ninth. He said it: "Let me just say that I had more than one foot on the top step [of the dugout]." -- Dave Trembley, Orioles manager, on how close he was to yanking Matusz from the game when the pitcher allowed three straight walks followed by an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

We were standing there the other day, conducting an autopsy of the Orioles, when the photograph of Dave Trembley, manager of the star-crossed Birds, appeared for examination. Suddenly a kind of shock and awe settled over us -- as if we had just discovered a beating heart in a stiffened corpse. It is a remarkable photograph -- an image from the Associated Press that is more conclusive and revealing than the MASN video. The photograph captures Trembley at what could hold up as the defining moment of his career -- the night he refused to take losing lightly during a time when losing had become accepted and even expected.

Here's a look at what other media are saying about manager Dave Trembley's status and the state of the Orioles six weeks into the 2010 season. • FoxSports.com's Jack Magruder ranks the Orioles last in his latest MLB power rankings. Just when the schedule lightened up, the best the Orioles could do was split six home games against fellow bottom-feeders Seattle and Cleveland. Brad Bergesen has been a bright spot in the rotation the last two times through. • Larry Dobrow from CBSSports.
