ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Philadelphia Phillies' Lenny Dykstra and Darren Daulton were no-shows at yesterday's workout. Dykstra contacted the NL office on Sunday night and said he would be detained by personal matters, but nobody seemed to know the whereabouts of Daulton.NL manager Felipe Alou said he understood that both would be in uniform for tonight's game."It bothers me, the fact that this is All-Star Game time and they were supposed to be present," said Phillies president Bill Giles. "The only players not present are my players.

Indians outfielder Albert Belle was suspended for one week yesterday by American League president Bobby Brown for intentionally hitting a spectator with a baseball. Belle immediately appealed. He can continue playing while the appeal is pending."I regret that I lost my spirituality for an instance," Belle said, reading from a prepared statement after the suspension was announced. "It will not happen again."He declined to comment on his appeal and would not answer any questions.Belle threw a ball at spectator Jeff Pillar of Cleveland during the seventh inning of Saturday's game against California, after Pillar heckled him about his problems with alcoholism.

Agent Tony Attanasio is leaving open the possibility that catcher Mickey Tettleton will accept a one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles, but only if adverse market conditions force him into salary arbitration.Tettleton is seeking a multiyear contract but has yet to receive a multiyear offer. The Orioles have asked him to accept a one-year deal and might get their wish if they are willing to meet a Dec. 7 deadline for offering arbitration. If Tettleton has not signed with anyone by that date, the Orioles will have the option of offering salary arbitration.

Catcher Mickey Tettleton apparently is becoming a more marketable commodity as this year's free-agent free-for-all continues to gather momentum.Agent Tony Attanasio, who only a week ago was wondering where Tettleton's first offer would come from, said yesterday that he has talked contract with a number of clubs interested in signing Tettleton.Attanasio would not say what clubs were involved in the negotiations, but indicated that four teams have made overtures during the past week. One may be the Oakland Athletics, the team that released Tettleton before the 1988 season.

For Terry Cooney, the questions never seem to stop. And the longer Roger "the Dodger" Clemens is able to avoid his suspension, the more Cooney is reminded of last year's incident in the playoffs. Cooney was the home plate umpire who threw Clemens out of the fourth game of the American League Championship Series. After deliberating all winter, AL president Dr. Bobby Brown decided that Clemens' indiscretion was worth a $10,000 fine and a five-game suspension to begin with the first game of this season.
