Diane Y. Daugherty, a retired Baltimore County special education teacher, died Sept. 20 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at St. Joseph Medical Center. She was 76. Diane Young, the daughter of a General Motors executive and a homemaker, was born in Hope, Ind., and was raised in Anderson, Ind., and Plainfield, N.J. After graduating from Plainfield High School in 1951, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. She also did graduate work in education at Loyola College and what is now Towson University.

DAUGHERTY, beloved husband of Donna Daugherty (nee Tuttle); devoted father of Daniel James Daugherty, Andrew Robert Daugherty, Tess Layton Daugherty; loving brother of Robert L. Daugherty Jr., Donald Daugherty, Linda Montalvan, Cheryl Bauman, Sandy Morford and the late John Daugherty. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and other families. Kalm, Donna L. Tenly and the late Allen L. Daugherty; loving brother of the late Naomi R. Thompson. Also survived by nine grandchildren. Services will be held at the family owned McComas Funeral Home, P.A., Abingdon, MD on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11 A.M. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD. Friends may call at the funeral home in Abingdon on Sunday, February 15, 2009 from 7 to 9 P.M. and on Monday from 10-11 A.M. prior to the service.

ARVIN; beloved mother of Cindy Sears and husband Robert, Lora Wise and husband William; loving grandmother of Larry, Keri, Michael and Brittany; fond sister of Lora Hoover, William, Tommy, Rethel, Donny, Ricky and the late Johnny Pack. Also preceded in death by daughter Georgia and parents Rethel and Myrtle Pack. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Daugherty Family Funeral Home and Cremation Center, P.A., 2601 Mountain Road in Pasadena where a service will be celebrated on Saturday at 8 p.m. Interment private.

Disaster drills are serious business, but they are not without the occasional lighter moment. Harford County's daylong exercise Wednesday featured a cast of hundreds, several of whom knew how to ham it up and a few who had trouble stepping out of character. Participants are told to act naturally. That's what Harford Sheriff's Office Deputy Mark Daugherty did, but his quick response would have scrapped the script. Daugherty was supposed to be the victim of an armed robber rushing into the Harford County Courthouse in Bel Air. Instead, the deputy spotted the gun right away and did his job. He "shot" first and wounded the perp.
