It took Catonsville until the third quarter to get its running game into gear, but the Comets turned on the afterburner shortly after halftime to put away host Towson, 76-59, in a Baltimore County 2A-1A game last night. The Comets (6-4, 4-2) used 26 points by senior guard Ed Garrett, including 10 in the third quarter, to give Art Gamzon his 200th victory as a high school coach."It's just nice to get the 'W'," said Gamzon. "The number of wins I have is immaterial. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a strong January for us."

For visiting Hereford, getting outshot, 29-10, didn't matter. Nor did coming within several eyelashes of giving up a half-dozen goals. That No. 8 Towson outplayed the unranked Bulls in most aspects of yesterday's Baltimore County 1A-2A League game was of little importance to Hereford coach John Mackert or his players. They scored a 2-0 upset win over the previously unbeaten Generals in a game Mackert said his team had waited for all season.John Wingeart scored off a throw-in by Matt Saunders, and Paul Diangelo put in a penalty kick for the Bulls.

Perry Hall defender Sean Wolf was simply trying for a clear when he sent a long ball toward the Towson goal late in the second half. But Wolf wound up with a whole lot more than anyone expected. Wolf's clearing attempt floated 60 yards and sailed over the head of Towson goalie Mark Schminke and into the net with about nine minutes remaining. The goal stunned everyone and helped No. 8 Perry Hall pull out a 1-1 overtime tie with No. 7 Towson in a Baltimore County Class 4A-3A game last night.

Perhaps the Towson boys basketball team was motivated to win one for head coach Randy Dase, who was out with the flu. Or maybe Dulaney, the Generals' opponent, took them too lightly. Of course, it's also possible that Towson really is just this good. The Generals marched into rival Dulaney's gym yesterday and walked out with an impressive 59-50 victory over the athletic Lions. Towson, which went 9-12 last season, won its seventh straight game after a season-opening loss to Friends and improved to 2-0 in Baltimore County Division I. The Generals' 7-1 start is their best since 1989.

Randy Dase have no trouble getting his Towson boys lacrosse team ready for its Class 1A-2A state championship showdown with Fallston.Feeding off a Fallston player's quote that was in a newspaper story, Towson got added fuel from a pre-game speech and whipped the Harford County champion, 9-7, at UMBC Stadium last night."
