COLLEGE PARK // No. 4 Maryland scored seven goals in the first quarter and went on to dominate Dartmouth, 14-2, Tuesday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Maryland (5-1) did not allow a Dartmouth shot until 6:56 in the second quarter and the Big Green did not get a shot on goal until 3:13 during an extra-man opportunity. Joe Walters scored four goals for the Terps, who led 11-0 at the half. Dartmouth got on the board in the fourth quarter with a goal from Bread Heritage at the 6:28 mark, but Maryland responded with its first man-down goal of the season on freshman Scott Tompkins' first collegiate goal with an assist by sophomore midfielder Drew Evans.

Katieanne Christian, Sarah Pzefi and Kristen Barry each scored two goals yesterday as Dartmouth College defeated visiting Maryland, 10-8, for the first time. After spotting the ninth-ranked Terps (5-3) a 4-1 lead, the eighth-ranked Big Green (3-0) scored four straight to lead 5-4 at the half. Devon Wills secured the win with five of her seven saves in the second half for Dartmouth. Maryland had won the previous 12 meetings, dating to 1993. Delia Cox led the Terps with four goals, giving her 16 on the season.

Senior midfielder Linda Ackermann scored three goals and had two assists as Salisbury captured its third straight Capital Athletic Conference championship in women's lacrosse with a 16-8 victory over Goucher yesterday. The Sea Gulls (12-0) are No. 1 in Division III and have won 23 of their past 24 games dating back to last season. With coach Cathy Reese back on the sideline after delivering her third child Wednesday, the No. 2 Maryland women overwhelmed No. 12 Dartmouth, 17-8, yesterday in College Park. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden recorded a career-high seven points, and senior Dana Dobbie had a goal and two assists. Maryland (6-1) took control early, scoring nine unanswered goals in the first 13:51 against Dartmouth (3-2). Navy 12, Holy Cross 11 -- Freshman defender Caitlin Mandrin Hill's goal with 2:57 left gave the host Midshipmen (6-0, 1-0 Patriot League)

Midfielder Hunter Lochte scored three goals, including the game-winner with 1:41 left in the second overtime, to lift No. 20 Towson over visiting Dartmouth, 7-6, yesterday in the first meeting between the two schools in 33 years. Dartmouth (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 first-quarter lead and held Towson (3-2) scoreless for the first 28:26 of the game. With 1:34 remaining in the first half, Lochte got the Tigers on the scoreboard when he scored from the crease after taking a pass from attackman Kyle Campbell.

Freshman Todd Richard scored with 17 seconds left to lead Hartford (11-3, 5-1) to a 10-9 win yesterday over Towson State in America East action in West Hartford, Conn.Richard got off his game-winning shot in the midst of a scramble in the mud in front of the Towson goal. A save by Hawks goalkeeper Chris LaMonica with four seconds left sealed the win for Hartford.With the win, Hartford set a record for overall and conference victories and claimed sole possession of second place in the conference.

Molly Fernandez (McDonogh) scored her 100th career goal and Mackenzie Cyr (Winters Mill) recorded a team-high three points as the seventh-seeded Penn State women's lacrosse team edged visiting Canisius, 14-13, in an NCAA Division I tournament first-round game Friday night. The Nittany Lions (13-6), who secured their first 13-win season since 1999, advanced to the NCAA second round and will face Massachusetts Sunday at 1 p.m. Cyr recorded her sixth hat trick of the season, while Fernandez had two to reach the 100-goal plateau.

The fourth-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team was upset by Dartmouth, 7-6, last night in Boca Raton, Fla. The Big Green (4-2) outscored the Terps 3-1 in the third quarter to erase the Terps' 3-1 halftime lead. The Terps (3-1) had two final chances to tie the game but Dartmouth goalie Andrew Goldstein made two saves in the final 45 seconds to preserve the win.
