Earlier in the season, there was a rare time when Long Reach senior forward Darryl Webb left the court shaking his head. The Lightning, which is 12-2 overall and 10-1 at the top of the Howard County standings, came away with the win - which is always first and foremost with Webb - over Mount Hebron. He just felt he could have made it a little easier for the team. "Darryl had nine points and was a little down with his effort," Lightning coach Al Moraz Jr. said. "After the game, I looked at the stat sheet and told him, `Darryl, you had eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists, so you were just a few possessions away from a triple double.

When Darryl Lee Smith Jr. was 3 years old, his parents sat in the front room of their East Baltimore home and placed a football and a basketball in front of him. Without hesitation, he chose the football and cradled it in his hands - going on to star as quarterback at the city's Edmondson High School and signing a letter of intent to play at Morgan State University. On Wednesday night, he became Baltimore's 48th homicide victim of 2005. The 19-year-old was shot and killed in the city's Westport neighborhood.

He is seven weeks removed from his 18th birthday, the youngest player on his men's basketball team. Yet Coppin State freshman forward Darryl Proctor has never behaved like the baby of the family. From the time in October when he first set foot on the practice floor, Proctor has seemed older, with his hard-nosed, studious approach to the game. And the truth is the Eagles (9-12, 9-3) probably would not be battling visiting Delaware State tonight for first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings without this budding, 6-foot-4, 230-pound star, who has rearranged the hierarchy on the Coppin State roster.
