WHAT WENT RIGHT The Terps took advantage of field position, a reasonably healthy offensive line, which opened gaping holes for Lance Ball, Da'Rei Scott and Chris Turner, as well as impressive blitz packages designed by defensive coordinator Chris Cosh that flustered North Carolina State all afternoon. WHAT WENT WRONG Senior right guard Andrew Crummey, playing in his first game in six weeks because of a broken leg, hurt it again early in the fourth quarter but said afterward that the injury isn't serious.

Performer of the Year Tristram Thomas, McDonogh After two straight All-Baltimore County selections, the senior earned his first Performer of the Year honor. Thomas went undefeated in the 1,600 and 3,200 during Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association competition and capped his unblemished campaign by taking the 1,600 (4 minutes, 28.39 seconds) and the 3,200 (10:01.36) at the MIAA championships. Thomas, who also won the 800 (2:04.52) at the MIAA meet, forged a first-place showing in the 3,200 at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - -Rookie wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey dropped catchable passes on three straight plays during a minicamp practice May 9. He still is waiting for a chance to make amends and silence any doubters as to his worthiness of being the No. 7 pick in the NFL draft. Heyward-Bey, a former Maryland standout, injured his right hamstring that same day and hasn't been allowed to practice. On Wednesday, Heyward-Bey watched as his teammates continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

College Park -- While suspended Terps Jared Gaither and Jaimie Thomas watched from the Byrd Stadium bleachers, and a host of injured teammates stood on the sidelines, the Maryland football team pieced together its first scrimmage of the fall season. Senior tackle Stephon Heyer, who missed last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, suffered a concussion at practice yesterday morning - despite coach Ralph Friedgen's instructions to have a non-contact session - and did not play. Also missing from the offensive line were center Phil Costa, who strained his back yesterday morning, Donnie Woods and Andrew Crummey.

Maryland-bound Darrius Heyward-Bey returned the second-half kickoff 67 yards to ignite a 10-point third quarter that helped No. 6 McDonogh to a 24-14 victory over Severn in Severna Park yesterday. Heyward-Bey's return to the Severn 16-yard line led to a 28-yard field goal by Brian Weiss and a subsequent 18-yard touchdown pass from Tim Brandeau for a commanding 24-6 lead for the Eagles (1-0). It was the second touchdown pass of the game for Brandeau, the other a 50-yarder in the first quarter to Tony Lott, who caught four passes for 93 yards.

CLEMSON, S.C. - Suddenly, it was eerily quiet. Deathly quiet, you might say. For the better part of three quarters, the orange-clad Death Valley crowd had been having a raucous party at Maryland's expense, and so had Clemson's talented "Thunder and Lightning" running backs. But the party ended after wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey took an end-around, cut toward the middle of the field and raced 76 yards to Clemson's 4-yard line - Maryland's longest run since 2003. The previously out-of-it Terps - embarrassed on defense and mistake-prone on offense - scored two plays later to pull to 17-13 and set up a most unlikely 20-17 victory over the No. 20 Tigers in Maryland's first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season.

INDIANAPOLIS -Darrius Heyward-Bey sounded like a track man yesterday when he talked about tomorrow's 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine. "I just want to run something comfortable. Nothing too crazy," the wide receiver from Maryland said. "I don't want to strain myself out there." What, he was asked, would be comfortable? "Somewhere around 4.4 [seconds], 4.3," he said. Anything less than 4.4 will elevate the pulse of scouts on teams that need speed at wide-out and improve Heyward-Bey's chances of landing in the first round of the draft April 25. Wide receivers don't run until tomorrow, and the No. 1 wide receiver of this year's class, Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech, isn't going to run until his pro day next month.
