The Woodlawn boys track and field team scored a lopsided victory at last night's Class 4A-3A West regional meet at the 5th Regiment Armory. It may be too soon to tell, however, if the Warriors suffered an equally big loss. After crossing the finish line first in his heat of the 500-meter race, sprinting standout Antonio Thomas collapsed in a heap with what was believed to be a strained right hamstring, which he said he suffered en route to his earlier win in the 300. The senior feels confident he will be ready for the state meet in 11 days.

BOWIE -- The Washington Bullets continued to hold auditions for the coming season yesterday when free-agent point guard Doug Overton of La Salle joined the preseason workouts at Bowie State.Overton, a 1991 second-round draft choice who was cut by the Detroit Pistons, traveled around the world for his tryout after leaving his Sydney team in the Australian Basketball League last week for a second crack at the NBA."The season is still going on over there," said Overton, "but I had an understanding with the team that I could get out of my contract if it meant getting another NBA tryout."

The Washington Bullets released former Loyola College guard Mike Morrison and former American University forward Ron Draper yesterday, trimming their roster to 16 players. That number includes forward John Williams, who has not reported to the club, and free-agent guard Ledell Eackles, still without a contract.Morrison, a 6-foot-5 guard and native of Washington, had been obtained in a trade with the Phoenix Suns last month. The Bullets gave up a conditional second-round pick for Morrison, who played in 36 games last season with the Suns.

It is a rare occasion when a team wins an argument with a referee. But that was the case with the Washington Bullets and National Basketball Association official Steve Javie, who has been disciplined by the league for "overreacting" in ejecting center Pervis Ellison in the fourth quarter of the Bullets' game with the Portland Trail Blazers at the Capital Centre Thursday.Javie also ejected Bullets guard Darrell Walker and head coach Wes Unseld and called four technicals against Washington in less than two minutes.

LANDOVER -- The Washington Bullets had taken a break in the last couple of years from opening the Capital Centre to the public to watch them make selections in the NBA draft. They reopened the arena last night, but the crowd hadn't forgotten the long-standing tradition attached to the Bullets' selection-making process: booing. In fact, despite its small numbers, the crowd hooted the choice of Louisville guard LaBradford Smith at the 19th slot in the first round so loudly that Bullets general manager John Nash felt a little defensive when he strode to the microphone to explain the pick after the first round ended.

LANDOVER -- Two important future story lines developed for the Washington Bullets last night, as National Basketball Association scoring leader Bernard King signed a contract extension and veteran guard Ledell Eackles played for the first time this season. Both King (39 points) and Eackles (13 in 15 minutes) were big contributors last night, but it was unsung free-agent guard Haywoode Workman who provided the perfect ending for the second straight game, hitting two clutch free throws with 7.5 seconds left to clinch a 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
