Kansas City Royals left-hander John Bale, already on the disabled list because of a tight shoulder, broke his pitching hand punching a door at the team's hotel in Cleveland. A club spokesman said Bale, a former Oriole, informed team officials he had pain in his hand after striking the door Friday. X-rays were taken during Saturday night's 4-2 win over the Indians, revealing the fracture on the side of his hand. Bale returned to Kansas City, Mo., yesterday morning. He will be examined by team doctors, possibly today.

NEW YORK -- Standing in front of his locker in a quiet visiting clubhouse, Orioles reliever Jim Johnson willingly shouldered the blame for his team's 2-1 loss last night to the New York Yankees. It was Johnson's ninth-inning walk to pinch hitter Bobby Abreu that put Hideki Matsui on second base and in position to score on Robinson Cano's two-out single to left field. Cano's hit broke a tie and sent the Yankees storming out of the dugout to celebrate the series victory before an announced 49,452 at Yankee Stadium.

Super sub Endy Chavez had four hits on a rainy afternoon at Shea Sta dium, one day after delivering the go-ahead homer in a 3-2 win over the Yankees.

WASHINGTON -- Who's pitching tomorrow? A simple enough question, you'd think, but the mirthless expression on the face of Washington Nationals manager Frank Robinson says otherwise. Every few days, when the fourth or fifth spot in Robinson's rotation comes up, reporters ask. "I don't know," comes the response. And he's not lying. Robinson hardly could have suspected Monday morning that the next night, in the midst of a playoff race, he'd start a kid straight from Double-A Harrisburg (where Darrell Rasner, 24, had a losing record)

NEW YORK -- The moment was loaded with all kinds of meaning, but Alex Rodriguez wasn't about to untangle it for anyone. In the heady aftermath of Rodriguez's dramatic walk-off grand slam yesterday, teammate Derek Jeter pushed him up the dugout steps for a well-deserved curtain call. The crowd roared and A-Rod beamed, and for one afternoon all the unpleasantness that had gone before seemed very far away. Rodriguez, at least for a while, has won back New York after his relationship with Yankees fans deteriorated badly last season.
