A recap of the Orioles' 7-6 win over the Yankees last night: A late hook Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera was on the precipice of the club's longest outing in nearly a month when he was ejected by plate umpire Chad Fairchild with one on and nobody out in the bottom of the eighth. With a 6-1 lead, Cabrera threw a high-and-tight fastball that hit Alex Rodriguez's left elbow. Fairchild immediately ejected Cabrera, to the surprise of the pitcher and manager Dave Trembley. Had Cabrera gotten one more out, it would have been the club's longest start since his complete game against the Kansas City Royals on July 2 . Cabrera, who was charged with three earned runs, picked up his just his second win in 13 starts.

NEW YORK -- It was a full-count, bases-loaded slider that Chris Ray threw here about a year ago that froze Hideki Matsui for a game-ending strikeout and backed the Orioles' faith in their closer of the future. Nobody from the organization doubts that is still the case, even as Ray's vulnerability seemingly increases each time he faces the New York Yankees. Brought on yesterday to convert a one-run save, Ray got two quick outs and then unraveled, surrendering a game-ending grand slam to Alex Rodriguez that turned what could have been the Orioles' second straight victory into a demoralizing 10-7 loss before 50,510 on a cold afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The talk was part counseling, part coaching, and it didn't last long. When hitting coach Terry Crowley pulled Nick Markakis aside in the tunnel leading to the Orioles' dugout, he implored the third-year outfielder to relax and to trust himself. For much of the past three weeks, Markakis has done neither, as one of the worst slumps of his young career weighed on his mind and his swing. But on a beautiful Memorial Day afternoon and with the surging New York Yankees in town, Markakis broke out in a big way, carrying the Orioles to a badly needed win with his bat and his arm. Markakis had three hits, including a tiebreaking solo homer in the sixth inning, and threw out a runner at home plate, and starter Garrett Olson redeemed himself with seven scoreless innings in the Orioles' 6-1 victory in front of an announced 34,928 at Camden Yards.
