George L. Stanley always had an adventurous streak. In his mid-teens, he left home to join the merchant marine. As a young man, he saved his money to travel around the world. And as a married man, he often took exotic trips -- most without his wife.Flying was usually the last mode of transportation chosen by Mr. Stanley, 93, who died Saturday of heart failure at his Darley Avenue home in East Baltimore. Most of his excursions were by bus, train or boat. After he made a brief attempt at driving a car, relatives and friends decided he shouldn't be behind the wheel of an automobile.

Andrew Wells is hoping to buy a Baltimore home for around the cost of an old car: Less than $10,000. Turns out he's in good company. One of every 10 city homes sold during the first half of the year - about 275 in all - fell in that price range. Twice as many sold for under $20,000. Often foreclosures, these properties are usually in bad shape but seem like deals to real estate investors and the occasional hopeful owner-occupier - such as Wells. "I don't have to worry about trying to get a loan," said Wells, 40, a bill-processing technician who works in Annapolis.

Alonzo Smith was walking Thursday in the 1600 block of Darley Ave. when he spotted his 92-year-old neighbor Janie Frieson standing in her doorway. "You OK?" Smith asked. Frieson smiled and assured him she was fine, and Smith walked on to his Northeast Baltimore home a few doors down. The brief exchange captured a sense of community that residents say endures on the block of mostly well-kept - and inhabited - brick rowhouses in the Darley Park neighborhood, even as the wider area grapples with the highest homicide rate in all of Baltimore.

In kindergarten, everyone in our class was given a coleus to take home. The leaves were velvety splats of moss green, cream and deep rose that looked like little botanical Rorshak tests. It turned out to be my initiation into gardening. Together, my mother and I planted it in the shade of the lilac where I inspected it every time I spit watermelon seeds over the porch rail. But while I applauded the plant's enthusiastic growth, I didn't like its looks. Moss green and rose weren't my colors.
