You could make a plausible argument that '80s pop star Thomas Dolby has been blinded with science. Since he was a teen, Dolby, now 55, has looked for ways to blend technology with sound - whether that meant writing a quirky synthpop anthem that rose to No. 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1982 ("She Blinded Me With Science") or inventing a cousin of the polyphonic ringtone likely playing on your cellphone today. Next week, Dolby will be named the Johns Hopkins University's first Homewood Professor of the Arts - a position that will enable him to help create a new center that will serve as an incubator for technology in the arts.

He was out. He was in. And now, late on a Tuesday evening in Annapolis, William M. Rickman Jr. was out again. In one week, the owner of Ocean Downs racetrack went from being a favorite in a bill lawmakers were writing on how to award licenses for slot machines to being the outcast. It was a dispiriting reversal of fortune after a summer of campaigning for gambling on the Eastern Shore. As Rickman saw it, he had been given a mountain and he had climbed it, and now, inside of days, it had been flattened.

Could Gov. Martin O'Malley be in the running to become the next secretary of Homeland Security? Not interested, says his press secretary. The National Journal named O'Malley Friday as a "dark-horse candidate " to replace Janet Napolitano, who announced earlier in the day she was leaving the Obama cabinet to become the first woman president of the University of California system. The Journal, which recently published a profile of Maryland's two-term governor asking if it was time to take his presidential ambitions seriously, noted that he had been tapped by President Obama earlier this year to be chairman of a national homeland security panel.

One of those who met Dickson was Susan Melefsky, who came to the Dark Horse with Dena Raimondo.

AT LAST. Three Democrats have said out loud they are ready to run for president in 1992. You know what that means. It means the political handicappers have to start giving odds.Paul Tsongas. 10,000 to 1 against winning the presidential nomination, 1,000 to 1 against winning the vice presidential. He has never run for national office before. Track record is very important. About 75 percent of all presidential nominees ran and lost before they ran and won the nomination. Some critics say Tsongas' liability is that he is a liberal Democrat from Massachusetts of Greek extraction.

Southwestern-themed bar Dark Horse Saloon and Irish Pub Finnegan's Wake, the improbably conjoined bars at the former Canton Arts & Entertainment complex, have switched owners. The pub is poised to close afterSt. Patrick's Day, says Marc McFaul, who after nine months at the helm sold the business to Kenny Der, a regular DJ at Dark Horse. Finnegan's is likely to be turned into an extension of the Southwestern theme at Dark Horse next door. The switch gives McFaul's tenure the sprawling complex's second-longest run. It lasted a little over five months as Canton Arts and Entertainment , which at one point included a bar, an oyster bar and a restaurant.  CAE opened in September 2009 and closed the next March.

When the question about this year's Opening Day starter is asked, Orioles manager Buck Showalter stiffens, then shakes his head. Showalter doesn't understand the label - or the importance - placed on naming an Opening Day starter. That person is only guaranteed to pitch in that slot once, and the success of the Orioles' pitching rebuilding project will be dictated not by the development of one pitcher, but the entire rotation. Since the Orioles dealt right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who was the team's Opening Day starter three of the past four years, to Colorado in February, the question has come up a lot. Three weeks into spring training, the inquiry is more appropriate.

Delaware's 19-6 rout of Detroit Mercy on Saturday kicked off the college lacrosse campaign, and ESPN analyst and former Syracuse midfielder Paul Carcaterra participated in a few conference calls Tuesday to prepare for the coming season. Carcaterra found some time in his packed scheduled to discuss interesting storylines. Were you surprised by the decision by Syracuse to join Pittsburgh in moving from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014? I wasn't because I was able to have some information financially as to why it made sense for Syracuse as an athletic department to make that move.

Here's the part where you can tell me how wrong (or how right!) I was on a review. This week's bar review is about Canton's Combination Irish Pub-BBQBar, otherwise known as Finnegan's Wake and Dark Horse Saloon. While both bars have their strengths, " neither place is yet up to the standards of some of the better bars just a block or two away . " The rest of the review is here . Agree, or disagree? Have your say in the comments.
