A 61-year-old Ellicott City woman was in critical but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore yesterday after she was struck by a car as she tried to cross busy U.S. 40 after dark Wednesday. Carol Anne Bowen of the 3300 block N. Chatham Road was hit at 6:37 p.m. just east of Plum Tree Drive as she tried to cross the highway while wearing dark clothing and without using a crosswalk or at an intersection, Howard County police said. She was flown to Shock Trauma by a state police helicopter.

A food delivery man was robbed and stabbed late Sunday in North Baltimore, police said. The man apparently had been trying to deliver food to a home in the 1000 block of Dartmouth Road, in the Chinquapin Park-Belvedere neighborhood, when he was approached by three men dressed in dark clothing. After taking his money and personal items, the men stabbed the victim and fled, police said. Officers found the man about 11:30 p.m. near the 1000 block of E. Northern Parkway. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but police had no word on his condition.

The coolest sporting event in South Florida this week is the Sony Ericsson Open, the popular pro tennis event in Key Biscayne. The tournament has been spiced up this year with something called Night Tennis, which is basically a glitzy downtown exhibition that features players in glow-in-the-dark clothing competing under black lights on a court that will open up to an all-night party that is free to the public tonight and tomorrow. The tournament is no slouch either, featuring just about every big name in professional tennis.

Pizza deliveryman is attacked with batA pizza deliveryman was attacked Friday night in the 5900 block of Harper's Farm Road, Howard County police said.Two boys, about 10 and 15 years old, approached the deliveryman about 11: 30 p.m. and asked him for a light for a cigarette, a police report said.When the victim said he didn't have a lighter, the boys, who were wearing dark clothing, demanded money and struck him in the head with a baseball bat, police said.No money was taken, police said.

A 22-year-old Linthicum man standing on Interstate 95 in Howard County was killed at 3 a.m. yesterday by a passing truck, forcing closure of the road for more than three hours and resulting in long traffic jams. State police at the Waterloo barracks identified the dead man as David J. Baker, and said his car was found parked on the southbound side of the highway two miles north of the accident, which took place on northbound I-95, between Routes 175 and 32. Police said Baker was wearing dark clothing and standing in the middle of the four-lane highway.

Martin Phillip Sonenshine, 27, of Westminster, was driving the third of four cars that struck a pedestrian.The Sun regrets the errors.A man dressed in dark clothing and walking across a busy, unlighted Route 140 was hit by four cars and killed Monday night.Curtis Donald Osborne, 47, of the 6000 block of Glen Falls Road in the Reisterstown area, was pronounced dead at the scene about 7 p.m. after he was struck by four cars near Route 91 in Finksburg.

A man told police he was tied up and robbed of cash and a handgun in a pre-dawn home invasion in Patterson Place committed by men who flashed a police badge, according to a police report.  The victim told police that at about 5 a.m. on Monday, he heard a loud banging at his front door in the 100 block of N. Montford Ave. and saw two unknown males standing outside the home wearing dark clothing - one who showed a police badge, the report says.  ...

City police said they were investigating an unusual armed robbery that took place Tuesday afternoon on the third-floor of a downtown hospital. The robbery was reported around 1:10 p.m. at Mercy Medical Center's McAuley Tower, in the 300 block of St. Paul Pl. Det. Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman, said two hospital employees were robbed of cash from their personal belongings. The incident prompted police to set up a perimeter around the hospital. Silbert said police were reviewing surveillance camera footage and were exploring whether the robbery was tied to another that took place recently in the same area.

Anne Arundel County Police say a pedestrian was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross College Parkway in Arnold. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. Saturday, police said. Officers responded to College Parkway near Bellrive Road and found the victim, identified as 20-year-old Thomas James Grant Becker, of Severn. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the car that struck him was on the westbound shoulder of College Parkway with some damage.

A 16-year-old Francis Scott Key High School student who allegedly broke into the homes of two girls in Taneytown was charged yesterday with attempted rape, three breaking-and-entering counts and three counts of possession of a deadly weapon.Taneytown Police Chief Mel Diggs said the arresting officers found a 13-inch butcher knife in the jacket worn by the suspect, who is a ninth-grade student.The assault attempts occurred in the Cloverberry town house and duplex development between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
